vtec is so overrated

Get into a 2001 or newer odyssey (3.5 V6 VTECH); get on the highway, and floor the s.o.b. Then tell me they're overrated.

I did that in my mom's Odyssey and for the weight and aerodynamics of that van I was blown away; when it crossed the redline I couldn't believe the force (or the speed) I was traveling at.

I admit, the interior looks cheap, the engine sounds a bit high-pitched, and the steering isn't all that great, but for a minivan, it's pretty dam swift.

Minivans are like a truck in disguise, aside from the chassies the engines and and gear ratios are very similar. (or used to be this is gonna exclude the now more popular diesils and super v8 heavy ram air turbo supercahrged shit)

When it was introduced, the interior wasn't that bad. Ok, the Sienna kicks ass right now, but it's pretty new. The Chrysler minivans are nice, but give it 3 years, and see which one looks cheaper. When the new Odyssey comes out, it'll be one of the top 2 minivans. Not necessarily in sales (the Chrysler ones always sell well no matter how crappy they are), but in terms of how good the car actually is.

Hey I was the grocery store last night and I saw a turbo charged shopping cart, made getting my groceries so much quicker. Handling sucked though. Point being that we could put a turbo (or ten) on any car to make it crazy fast..but all you have is a death trap if the rest of car is not built to perform with the engine. I read an article about the new C6 Vette with stock 400 bhp and the problems they were having keeping it on the road in the corners of the test track. Chevy had to completely redesign the suspension and all that crap just to handle the power to weight issues. Most "ricers" don't have the money that it would actually take to completely re-do their suspension, steering ratio and all that other crap to their cars. So essentially what we have here is a engine with mad HP's and car that can't handle it, making it dangerous for everyone else on the street. You can't turn a Ferrari into an economy car not matter how hard you try. BMWs are made in the factory to be "performance" automobiles...Hell the M3 is a freakin GT car. No Honda...no matter what you do to it is going to keep up with an M3 or M3 CSL on a track. Impossible. Next thing you know the ricers are going to try to put wings on the sides of their doors and try to make their cars airplanes. Where does it stop?

I think the entire point here is that you have to sink a bunch of money into the "ricer" cars to make them perform anywhere near the stock performance of a Bimmer. After all that, you still have a FWD car, which is well know to have inferior handle characteristics.

Why not just start with a Bimmer?

My dad is a Honda man - right now he owns 3 Accords. Every time my mom gets in my car, she comments on how much nicer it is (it has 140k mi). One of his Accords is a top of the line V6 (36k mi).

But all of us here love BMW's not only for the power. BMW's handle and stop amazingly well and even though the S2K puts out 120 horses per liter, there is something special about BMW power. The sound, the feel, the whole experience...it's just second to none.
You're damn right. I drive my mum's E46 325i (manual, of course) as much as i possibly can because i just love that engine to bits. Its not overly powerful but the way it spits out its power, especially from 3,000rpm onwards, and the way it surges to the redline is completely intoxicating. And the noise, oh the noise[headbang]

Steering, brakes, engine, chassis....its the whole content of the BMW and the way it melds so beautifully with the driving experience. I'm lost for words. [bigcry]

To get a Honda/Toyota/Suburu/most imports up to the point where it can (and will) race with other GT cars takes alot of $$$, and I think that's the point being made. Why spend that money and labor when you can start off right from scratch with a car that will compete with the warranty voided car you've just built??

Most import cars are not built off the line for performance, not unless you start looking at the Skyline series, or a Euro WRX STi 330, 350Z, etc. With the Supra no longer in production, there went the last great GT import car imho. Everything else is tiny - You have to hop it up with ungodly mods to compete with other 'stock' GT cars offered by many other companies.

Honda does a good job at what it does best. Engines. (I think someone else said that too?) They run forever, and require little to no maintaince. Enjoy their success in the field they excel at..

I just don't get the mindset of 'buy small, build it into a beast'. In the end, you'll spend more money than if you had been patient and just started off with a good base car.. It's like the credit card epidemic in the US. 'I've got credit, lets go spend money, to hell with saving for something better, I can get XXXXXX right now!'

Yeah you can make any car "nice" but 95% of rice dosnt, a stock m3 will take just about all of them
wot u mean on handling or off the lights??? if your talking about handling ok il believe you that it will beat most ricers, thats because not many people will spend money on full suspension etc, but i can guarantee you that a honda civic vtec turbo will destroy an m3, one like mine which does 1/4miles under 12s and if u have a race where you doing about 60mph and then just launch off..... il still destroy an m3

Depends. The big ass front spoiler showing the giant front mounted intercooler is usually a tip off. Same with the stripped interior with racing seats. A real enthusiast can tell if a person is just a ricer with no clue but the work done to the car. I've only seen one wolf in sheep's clothing Honda, but he still had a giveaway cuz of the stripped interior.

Still, I'd rather be in the M3. You don't go racing at stoplights all the time. If the two cars ever pull up in front of a restaurant or club or something, guess which driver's gonna get all the attention? Which interior do you think a girl is gonna wanna get into and be seen in? Gotta be well rounded my friend.

If you enjoy modding cars, I suggest you look into getting a used E36 M3 and tuning that up.

what you are forgetting here is that the m3 does not have a full hks suspension and does not have a turbo. the m3 can double easily as a dailly driver and not rattle the fillings out of your teeth.

All minivans in the past 6 years are fast for what they are.
I dunno about that one; the Ford minivan isn't that fast, the caravan isn't that quick. The Nissan (that one's pretty cool).

My only point was that if you get into an Odyssey and floor the thing, it won't feel like a bulky brat-transporter, it feels like a real car with real muscle. Maybe this is my ignorance, but I attributed the pick-up and agility to the V-tech engine. I've never been in a minivan with that much punch. And it makes it fun to drive.

Oh, and I think the siennas are now coming with VVT engines, (I'm not sure though).

And regarding the cheapness of the interior. Let me say it like this:

My mom's odyssey was bought new; it's only 3 years old and has less than 28k on it and the knobs for the rear climate control have cracked, both power sliding doors have broken (motor and track) the plastic side panels have started to sag, the rubber around the rear glass fell out (literally fell out), the carpet has come out of its holding, one of the compartments broke, etc.

And it's not like I have any younger siblings that would mess the car up. My mom barely drives it and she isn't rough with it; it just falls apart. Maybe it's just hers, who knows.
