WHen they come out with good electric cars, they will be much much much much faster than gas cars.

Do you know how much torque an electric motor has??!1?? It's INSANE!!!!
Really good point. I was actually going to start a new thread on this but since you brought it up, I 'll just what I was gonna say here. Basically, electric motors have a ridiculous amount of torque and they work super duper fast. An example of this is the Toyota Prius. It packs a gasoline motor and an electric motor and here are the specs:

Gasoline Motor
Power: 76hp @ 5K rpm
Torque: 82 lb-ft @ 4,200 rpm

Electric Motor
Power: 67hp @ 1,200 - 1,540 rpm
Torque: 295 lb-ft @ 0 - 1,200rpm

That's right, 295 torque @ 0-1200 rpm !!!!!!!!!!!!! That torque is GREAT to get the car moving from a stop (when the electric motor is solely powering the car). Also assures that you have more than enough "power" to haul your passengers and all their stuff around.

And the HP figure is no joke. Wait till they start making better motors. remember, when they make electric-only cars, the ENTIRE space where the engine is right now will be filled with a motor (or two... or maybe three?!?!), gearing, etc.

If someone here took a high-power electric motor with the same horsepower figures as their engine (lets just say 200 hp) and put it in direct place of the gas engine.

That 200 hp motor would have enough torque to rip the transmission from the car, bend the driveshaft and probably rip the differential off with it. Of course, we're talking a very large motor, but the awesome thing about electric motors is that they can be built mostly for torque, or mostly for horsepower (IE the dremel has an insane amount of hoserpower for its size -- 35,000 rpm!!) Obviously its not even 1 hp but for its size it is extremely high. It has not torque though... which is why I couldn't use it to cut through the studs on my car's exhaust manifold.

I don't care much more torque, I'm more concerned with maximum horsepower. Torque is what you feel, horsepoewr is what you see. I don't care how hard the car pushes me back in my seat, I just wanna see the needles climbing and watch as the car accelerates like a madman !!!!

At the Autocross event yesterday, someone ran an Honda Insight. When I saw it line up in the starting grid, I'm thinking WTF?!?!?!?!?! Then after he took his first run I was thinking HOLY $hit!!!! The guy was a good driver and was turning 33.xxx second laps. The fastest laps of the day were around 30.xxx seconds, average laps were 35.xxx . The thing looked like it handled surprisingly well.

Okay people, I know this guy sounds stupid but can we not use the word retard please....just call him stupid. Most people who have mental retardation can write better than this ass anyway.

the only reson I am posting now is I laughed to myself about the retard comment. Nothing against the mentally ill, but do you guys remember the huge fight like last year about the use of the word "retard" lol

It is interesting to watch the evolution of politically correct terminology.

In this case, words like 'mongoloid', 'idiot' and 'dumb' gradually evolved into the more nuanced 'mentally retarded'. Of course, it didn't take long for that to become 'retard' and now the new PC terms is . . .

cognitively disabled.

I am sure it will only be a matter of time until someone complains about that one, or turns it into something derogatory.

I think its retarded that nobody has brought up the fact that while an electric engine might have loads of torque it will still sound like S**T and have no character about it.

This is the biggest tragedy regarding the demise of the petrol engine.

Good point, but I think it'd be the fact that you didn't hear anything other than some clicks and whirrs.

Speaking of cars driving themselves, don't MB's already have a feature while cruising on autopilot, that it slows the car down and speeds back up as it approaches other car's?(spots the bumper or something?). We're close in the respect of having GPS and Nav systems almost standard in every new car - Just need the car itself to be able to read and comprehend those maps, then it's Minority Report driving for all of us.. [:(]

This was an option on my 5er...it is called active cruise control. I opted NOT to get it. You can set it to slow you down once you are within a designated (set by you) distance. and then speed you back up to the set speed. CRAZY[screwy]

do you realized the size and weight of the batteries that would be needed for 2 or 3 motors.... especially powerful motors.

The university of pittsburgh has a project that i was a part of before i graduated of converting a 1996 GMC into an electric truck. There are 24, 6 volt batteries needed to power the 2, 30 horpower motors that we used. This took up most of the truck bed and the engine bay is completely filled. Now i'm sure the technology has improved and things are probably smaller by now but that truck is REALLY heavy.

(First pic is before old engine removed) These are beginning stage pics.
