And the I6 3.2M gets bumped up to 360hp

MUNICH, Germany -- BMW AG plans a coupe version of its Z4 roadster, according to company sources.

Like its predecessor, the Z3 coupe, the new coupe will be built at BMW's plant in Spartanburg, S.C., where the roadster is produced.

The decision to build the coupe is surprising. The previous model was not considered a success. During a five-year production run that ended in 2002, BMW sold fewer than 18,000 Z3 coupes.

The Z4 coupe is expected to go on sale next summer. BMW will show a concept version of the car at next month's Frankfurt auto show.

BMW says the car will compete with the Porsche 911 and Cayman coupe, which goes on sale in January.

The Z4 coupe will be powered by BMW's 260-hp, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. An M performance version also is planned with a 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine from the M3, upgraded to 360 hp from 343 hp.

A BMW source says the Z4 coupe will look sleeker than its predecessor. It also will have a roomier trunk.

Hmm...

BMW says the car will compete with the Porsche 911 and Cayman coupe???

My guess, its the X-Coupe .. or

360 HP, they get that much out of their V8s!!!

That is going to be one QUICK car! Good Bye Boxster S!

Let's pray to god it lives up to it, less body roll like the current car and a little better handling.

WE won't get the 360hp version. The european e46 m3's got 343 hp, the US m3's got 333hp. I would bet you money the US version of the Z4 coupe will get the 343hp version, where-as the europeans wll get the 360hp version.

It's been that way for us for years and years [:(]

I'm confused....so now there will be a Z4 convertible and coupe? Will the Z4M be in both convertible and coupe forms, or is it gonna be like the M roadster of the past???

All this number stuff is confusing...I liked it better when there was just 3,5,7,Z3,Z8, and X5 hehe....

If all the rumors come true, the reference names would presumably be as before:
Z4 Roadster
Z4 Coupe
M Roadster
M Coupe

But there were some other rumors saying that they would NOT use the M Roadster title. That's where the Z4M or MZ4 name comes in. Only BMW knows for sure...

i can't believe this came from YOU of all people. You know that the M3 motors are the same. 343bhp DIN = 333bhp SAE

I actually think it is cool. For some reason, I have always like the "ugly" M coupe (Z3 coupe) too.

As I have always said, the main downfall of the Z4 is the interior. It is thin, plasticky and very cheap looking. I'm not saying it is not functional, or a bad layout...but the materials are below any other BMW (besides the X3..which I do like :)

Make the interior more like the E46, or even the E90...and I think the Z4 coupe is gonna be HOT!

I've loved the Z4 from day one, as well as the Z3 & Z3 coupe. The coupe is just so cool and unique. It's kinda like a cult car, like a 2002 or a Karhmann Ghia. Z4 coupe should be a hot number!

I think the 360 hp in the article I posted above is DIN. Therefore, we should see around 348 - 350 hp.

I was hoping for a Z4M that was approaching 400hp, but 350hp is probably close enough. If the 0-60 figures match a C6 'vette, I'll be happy. With the lower size/weight the Z4M might even outperform the C6, and of course handle much better. I want to be competitive in SCCA Solo I Super Stock class, which is where the Z4M and the new M3 will probably wind up, with the vettes.

Besides, what's a few hp between friends, especially when you factor in torque curves? [hihi]

Aparently YOU Looked at the wrong car. Looks like about 90% of that dash is plastic.
Exactly. Thanks for posting this Eric! I drove a brand new Loaded!! 2004 Z4 for almost 3 weeks while my 330cic was in the shop. The dash, pillars, doors, cosole are all this hard, scratchy plastic (it felt and looked just like My first Sony boombox when I was 12). Also when you close the doors on a Z4, sorry....but it sounds just like a Civic or Tercel. I really enjoyed the way it drove, but it rattled something terrible, and I felt that I was driving a very poorly built car.

Every review on the Z4 (whether positive or negative), there is always mention of the Extreme cost cutted interior. It's just a fact. Just like in the new 5er or the X3...I'm not putting it down, it is just pure plastic.

Definitely a shame bmw thought this was a bad design and had to make that plastic cold looking interior for the z4.
