Modern day traction control systems even anticipate a slip and are completely instant. I can't speak for BMW's traction control, but the traction control on Mercedes is insanely fast to know when the tires are slipping...even if there is not even an inch of rear wheel slippage, the traction control will kick in and sort things out before you can say "LSD" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, but a limited slip can activate as soon as the wheel starts moving, traction control can't. You're comparing apples and oranges dude.

Not really, if Benz skips the LSD for traction control, I think there is very good reason for that. Kinda the way you insist BMW is doing alright with 1-piston calipers. [hihi]

Yes, save money. If you were to buy a limited slip from BMW, it's around $3500+, to buy a regular open dif, its around $1500+. Without the markup, it's still close to the same! Mercedes knows that 90% of their customers aren't going to "need" a limited slip and probably think differential means the climate control settings or something.... and since traction control can help them through rain and snow and do a great job at it, it makes sense. Why throw an expensive dif in there if you dont need it? Traction control could never replace a type of limited slip, but it can make up for it in the rain and snow.

The m5 on the other hand NEEDS a limited slip. Why? Becuase its a sports car, and its just a bmw type of thing to do.

It's okay, let them discuss their "Traction Control"

OUR traction control is what god gave us. Driver ability, and most importantly... our FEET [hihi] [hihi] [hihi]
That's right Eric. A Merc is a great car if you're a bit of a granddad but if you want to really push on and feel at one with the car then BMW is the way to go. That's why we have one!

Only God knows how badly I want an LSD on my car [bigcry]

Wtf are you guys talking about? I'm pretty sure the E55 is RIGHT behind the M5 on the track...despite BMW's best efforts with a more powerful engine, amazing suspension and brakes, the E55 is right on its ass on a race track.

And no, an LSD doesn't cost $3,500+. For the G35C, Infiniti gives it to you as part of a $1,600 Sport-tuned suspension package which includes 19" wheels, sport-tuned suspension, and the VLSD.

I don't think it was about price, I think it was about the car being better off without an LSD.

You're the one who argues that BMW is just fine with 1-piston calipers.
Well, they are fine for most of their customers. But if I keep my e34 I'm going to put the 850csi 4 pot calipers on my car...it IS bolt up.

BTW
Does AMG offer any engine or suspension mods/upgrades for the E 55?
Right now, AMG does offer only the raised speed limiter, a F1 style steering wheel, a 30% limited slip differential and a modified gearbox ECU unit. These mods are not officially available for the US.
Hope that dispels the confusion that traction control can totally make up for a limited slip.

You guys are stupid, arguing over 1-piston calipers. Its common sense that BMW is being cheap on the the most important thing in a car other than HP and Grip and thats stopping power!
