Not the same at all though. Just kind of mimmics the LSD though the merc isn't quite as sport oriented as the M5. I'm sure you'll see tons more m5's at a track or autocross than e55 amg's.
Doesn't matter, MB's traction control responds instantly to distribute power evenly. Not saying that it shouldn't have an LSD, but if MB felt they didn't need one for an $80K+ car, they have good reason.

Yeah, I agree with Emil :) As much as Mercedes' recent reliability glitches annoy the hell out of me...they know what they are doing. Our Z8 Alpina has no LSD, but the traction control responds instantly also. So, just because a very expensive car does not have LSD, does not mean it is inferior at all.

If the E55 had the engine and transmission of of the M5, and with the sumptuous interior of the current E Class.....that would be just about perfect. M5 engine + tranny= very, very good. M5 interior + exterior= not so good!!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee at the end.

I do like the interior and exterior of the M5 though! It's just so so so amazingly nice!
Sorryyyyyyyyyy. It's just that one of my good friends in my German Dept. at UCLA is Emil with NO e. I will get it right eventually, or you can just accept the German spelling Emil. Isn't it nicer without the e anyway? [poke]

yea but a LSD is more efficient since it doesn't decrease power to one wheel, it just 'shares' the power. The traction control uses the brakes to keep a spinning wheel from spinning, which hopefully would cause the other wheel to spin instead. It does work though.

Yeah and an LSD makes for more predictable powerslide too, which I think you'd be doing a lot of in an E55....

No worries, deutsch I know that's the German spelling of the name. [thumb]

Eric, I know what you mean but the MB traction control doesn't work like other traction controls. Under hard acceleration, it doesn't cut the power out, the traction control just redistributes the power...traction control knows you're trying to accelerate hard and isn't trying to ruin that. I believe BMW's traction control works the same way?

If I had an E55 AMG i'd be going through a set of tires every few days!!! (so would you...heheheh)

Emile would just drive over curbs [rofl][rofl]

LSD vs TC seems like just another electrical v mechnical front that cars are going through. computers are cool, but it does go overboard at times. the real question is does it keep from certain someone from jumping curbs?

but honestly it seems computers and "advancements" are only there to kill the fun [:(] yea yea, there's the "safety" deal also.. but give me rowing gears w/ LSD and i'll be grinning all day and night.

Thing is, a limited slip differential is worlds more efficient than traction control. But a limited slip differential is actually pretty expensive, and can interfere with traction control. They just decided to use traction control as the limited slip.

But yea....limited slips rock. I won't buy a bmw without one.

In my book it says traction control cuts trottle input to the engine as well. I don't know if BMW has improved thier traction control (what 8 years later by now) but my traction control is absolutely worthless and a big piece of shet. I trun it off if i want a good start. Absolutely WORTHLESS. (maybe it will be good for snow but i hear it isn't. Haven't tried it myself yet.)

Besides, there is nothing better than ripping tire with TWO wheels!! Twice the scream!

The only time LSD's are bad is when you are going up hill around a corner in the rain on bald tires....... (otherwise i would still have my e30 :( :(...... )

I think race car drivers would disagree, but then again, their differentials are a little better than what any of us could see paying that much for!!

BTW The e30 is EXTREMELY tail happy, just the nature of the car. My e34 can take off pretty good on turns in the rain and both had 25% lsd's.

I miss the e30, that thing was fun as hell in the rain....sometimes. On the highway, with the crappy tires I had, it was more scary than anything.

We should start a poll...

Who @ bmwboard.com will be the first to:
Drive the new M5
Own the new M5
Sell their house in order to buy the new M5

I agree completely, that car was a blast for ripping tire, fish-tailing and non-highway wet driving....

It was on the highway. i should have been driving below the speedlimit - oh well live and learn - luckily i am still doing the living part.

Doesn't traction control respond more quickly than an LSD?

I know that my traction control is more helpful than my LSD in the snow. Last winter on my Pilot Sports, one night it started snowing and I BARELY made it home (wasn't supposed to snow that night so I used my car). On my street I was barely able to get my car on the side of the street to park it out there for the night, and my street is completely flat. I disengaged traction control and the car would just sit there on the thin snow, now moving an inch. Even if I gently let the clutch out or "feathered" it without any throttle, the rear wheels would still not get enough traction and the car would just sit in place. But then when I turn traction control back on again, the rear wheels would slip and then the traction control would correct the slippage and would actually get me moving!

I need snow tires. [bigcry]

Uh no? A limited slip reacts instantly (most have clutches in the differential), traction control has to first DETECT a slip, and then decide what to do while building brake pressure.

The limited slip wont give you traction when there IS no traction though. Thats why traction control is good becuase if you loose traction to BOTH wheels (which will happen with a limited slip and too much power), the traction control will get you out by keeping the engine at a speed that will allow the wheels to grip. A limited slip and traction control aren't the same thing (except in the case of the new mercedes and a few other cars), which is why they put both systems on cars like yours.

All this whining about traction control....... I get around fine in the winter and rain with my car, and I sure as hell dont have traction control, and you all probably have better tires [:p]
