Peaked at 3.59 here in Oswego, IL (Shell in Oswego hit over 4 for prem according to my wife).
About the ethanol issue though, if we use to much ethonol (which is more expensive to produce, or at least used to be) it will drive corn prices up which will cause the farmers to produce more corn. This can cause a number of problems that I really don't think that the polititions that are pushing for this have considered.
1. Crop rotations - without the necessary acerage to do proper crop rotations due to more acreage going to corn, more pestisides will need to be used to control bugs. Otherwise, bugs will then deminish the crops causing a corn shortage.
2. Have even just a rumor of drought? Expect gas prices to skyrocket.
3. There is not even close to enough corn produced in this country to even come close to producing enough ethanol to have mandatory 80% ethanol fuels across the country and keep up with demand.
4. With more acreage going to corn, expect all other food sources to inflate higher than normal and any other products that are produced from crops. Keep in mind that many plastics use soy beans as a main ingredient.
