Man! I drove by the gasoline station this morning and saw the regular gas at $2.69. By afternoon, it was up to $3.19!! That's 50 cents in just a few hours. Good thing Sam's club hasn't jacked up the prices yet and got $2.95 for a 93 octane. What prices you guys have on your areas?

My local Sunoco station in NJ is charging $3.19 for super (93 octane). Seems as though they raised their prices even before they got hit with an increase from their distrubutor. I mean, this gas was already in the ground at their station before the hurricane hit. Can anyone say "price gouging??"

All this petrol talk has got me thinking.

I know that here in OZ one of the political parties wants to blend ethanol (yes, you read right!!!!) into all petrol to reduce the price for farmers etc. Others are saying that they want the government to reduce its excise on petrol which is about 50% of the price we pay here. The price now is around $1.20 AUD a litre, although I pay about $1.32 for Optimax (98RON).

What I say to this is that if the price increases then use your fuel more intelligently. If that means selling your gas-slugging 4WD then so be it. Blending ethanol into the fuel will reduce the price, but what about the people who don't want their beloved engines to disintegrate before their very eyes? We could make the government reduce their excise but they'll just slug you somewhere else to make up the difference.

I get really pissed (not at you guys; i'm starting something else here) when people complain about the oil price. They somehow think that it should be exempt from market forces. Well I think that if the price goes up then use your noggin' and buy cars that use less fuel. When I see the amount of 4WD's running around the city here I just shake my head in disbelief. You guys have the same problem over there; Hummers, F350s, Suburbans etc are just a total waste of petrol IMO, unless you actually NEED one for business etc.

I'm just ranting. [hihi]

Chesty Bonds - it doesn't really bother me that it costs more to drive, what bothers me is it will effect anything and everythign on the market. EVERYTHING made by a petroleum product, everything delivered on a truck, plane, boat, etc., and, well, EVERYTHING associated any way with a petroleum product will raise in price to make up for the costs. THAT is what the serious problem is.

....
We have that here, especially in the midwest where farming and corn are a way of life. Some states are making it mandatory that state owned vehicles are designed specifically to burn ethanol blend. As I recall, GM is "partnering" with these states.

The negative argument was that it requires more fossil fuel $$$ to make the ethanol than you save by burning ethanol as fuel. However, with the recent issues, this is clearly changing.

Pete, thanks for hanging out here! I really like reading your posts and hearing what's happening in other parts of the world.
