Thanks for clearing that up!

I do know several people that are like that when it comes to Mercs. I am continually surprised at the number of people that I know that have absolutely no clue to automobiles except for the manufacturer's names.

I have just never really paid attention to MB, I guess it's that automatic tranny that just keeps gettin' in my way. (and yes, I know that there are manuals out there)

vlad, for most of the regular Mercedes models, Mercedes offers an optional "AMG Sport Package". It gives you AMG wheels and AMG body work, but it is still the regular Benz. It does not have the AMG suspension and AMG engine. Actually, with the previous-generation CLK and other models, it was visually impossible to tell the difference between a CLK430 and a CLK55 AMG. Exterior appearance was identical, aside from the different tags. What AMG is doing now, is that the true AMG cars get those twin-spoke AMG rims, and most models get a juicy quad-pipe exhaust (or at least twin-pipes on one side).
You're also right, Mercedes mostly uses only automatic transmission cars. This is because Mercedes' primary goal is luxury, and the fact that they have perfected the automatic transmission (the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are the same as their manual equivalents...no acceleration loss at all). But I have driven a C230 Sports Coupe in manual and I absolutely hated it. The shifting was notchy and weird, and there was no hand-brake !! The emergency/parking brake was a foot brake, just like a lot of automatic cars !! Also, the stupid car REQUIRES you to engage the parking brake in order to take out the key...how stupid is that !! I love Benz a lot and they make damn great cars (we actually just traded in our 2001 S500 for a 2004 S500 4Matic), but I think BMW is way ahead of Mercedes in terms of the drive.

I was talking to my barber the other day about which is better overall BMW or MB. He drives a early 90's model SL500, I drive a '99 5series. His main argument is that in all classes that there is no car that you can put next to a MB and compare.....because the price on MB is higher......????....I told him he is crazy. I told him when was the last time MB receive an award for their powerplants???? When was the last time a "normal" MB received rave reviews for handling and driveability. Needless to say he stuck to the fact that MB's cost more than BMW's as being reason enough.....Ok guys lets eat him alive shall we?!

In all fairness, Mercedes has always been ahead of its time with technology. BMW's engines do win crazy awards but BMW still uses some old technology in which it is required for the driver to take the engine to redline like once a month to clean out the hydrocarbons...many engines on the market (including Mercedes engines) are not like that.
I think that Mercedes is all about class and luxury whereas BMW is all about the drive...making you feel the road and being connected to the car.
adrean8j, I just wanted to say, you have a really sweet 540i...I love that thing, it looks so damn aggressive and I bet it kicks ass to drive.

The price on MB is always higher? Well, I disagree. I actually considered a C320 compared to my 325 because it was cheaper. My friend has a C32 so my experiences with the C class were very nice indeed. Then I actually checked out the regular version and was very disappointed. Def didn't have teh ride and handling of the BMW and I realized that what I truly wanted was a BMW so that's what I bought. MB really only starts winning at the upper levels. BMW hangs quite well in the 3 series/C class and 5 series/E class levels.
