I never realized Mercedes owners were faking the "AMG" like some bimmer owners fake the //M. By the way, I saw a fake M5 a few days ago. As I drove up on it, It was obvious to me it wasw a 528 sport package. He didn't even have any //M body works.

Ok people for the last time: "YOU CANNOT FAKE AN //M YOU CAN ONLY FAKE //M3 OR //M5"
BMW Makes vehicles with the M symbol on them. If the manufacturer does it how is it faking? JEEZ!!? [???1] [:(!]

BMW does not make a US model with a full-size external M-badge on the trunk or front grille. M-badged specific parts like wheels, shifters, etc., are a different matter.

I appreciate what you are saying, but around here an added exterior M-badge is generally considered to be a poseur M-car, even if they don't take the next step and add a number after the M.

If the car didn't come with the M, you shouldn't add the M. That is not gospel, just an opinion shared by many.

I know I know, but it is irritating that a person can get Dinan additions or AC Schnitzer additions(everything except modifying the motor itself) and get a trunk badge but you cant get all Motorsport parts and get a trunk badge..........????

Yes, but M is sacred over here. It hasn't been diluted as much as it has over in Europe with the non M-car M-badging. In the US, for the most part, an M is a complete vehicle. More and more M-badged parts are creeping into the US cars to be sure, but some of us 'old' purists still see the M as the ultimate Ultimate Driving Machine. The tuner companies in the US are not as entrenched or established as in Europe, we don't get Alpinas over here save for the Steptronic Z8 and the occasional grey-market car. It is a cultural difference if you will.

I still lust after the old hand built M cars.

CLK430 with a AMG badge means it is a regular 4.3l V8 with a AMG package. You should see many Mercedeses driving around in this setup. There are also many of S430 AMG or S500 AMG. This package does not affect the engine.
I have noticed a number of them. So who does the work on the cars?

It's just the bodykit and rims (sport package). Like the M-Tech body kit and M designed rims for our cars. You can order it as a factory option or have the dealer install it afterwards. Or just buy it in pieces and have someone independent install it I suppose.

And then they can use the AMG? I guess they think so.

From what I have been reading (MB's own publications) the AMG is tied very much to the engine performance and this seems central to the AMG product. So they are faking I would think.

Whereas the M for BMW seems far more elusive from what I have been reading and they (BMW) does a lot of crossover with vehicles and M. Leaving the M application more questionable. MB says more matter of fact, it's the engine that is core to AMG.

At least this is what I have determined.

May I offer the solution to this "puzzle". There is no such thing as a CLK430 AMG. The owner of that CLK430 Cabriolet thought he could impress others by purchasing the $10 "AMG" badge and sticking it on his car, trying to elevate the status of his own car. I guess driving a $60,000+ convertible wasn't enough for him, he wanted to elevate his status even more. Your local Mercedes dealership can do this for you or you can pickup an "AMG" badge from any tuning shop. I have seen many people with CLK 430's (coupes and convertibles) that put the AMG badge on the back, but I have also seen an S500 AMG before, as well. I have even seen Mercedes vehicles that are completely tagless except for one "AMG" badge on the back and are obviously not AMG cars (I can tell the differences between an AMG car and a regular Benz without looking at the tag). Like I said, the car is really just a CLK430 or S500 or whatever car you see it on...the person just adds the AMG badge to try to impress other people, attempting to fool others into thinking the owner actually has a real AMG car.
I asked my family's Mercedes salesman as to why people do this, and he just said it, plain and simple, that they "can't afford the real thing" (referring to a true AMG car), so they just buy the badge to try to look cool. Pretty damn lame if you ask me...anybody who does that is just a pathetic fool in my book.

Well, I only wish that I had my Dig Cam in the car with me to snag a pic of this "AMG". It definitely had body work, (spoilers, wheels and maybe suspension), that were not factory 430 CLK, but my concern was if there was any engine work from AMG inside.

From the replies here, (and I really 'preciate all of them), apparently there is no 430 AMG version of a power plant.

No, there WAS an AMG 430 power plant. It came on the C43. Last gen C class. Big fat V8 in a little car. But, there definitely wasn't an AMG 430 in the CLK.

And of course MB drivers buy the cars for status. That's the main reason. Lots of people buy the higher models for the bigger number on the back. THey have no idea what those numbers mean, they just know that the bigger the number, the more expensive and more prestigious. My mom's one of those people. She picked the E class b/c of the MB name. My dad wanted the Lexus LS430 for the electronic toys and stuff but Lexus just didn't have the status my mom wanted. I think my neighbors across the street are the same. I doubt they have any idea that their S55 and SL55 are performance models. I'm pretty sure they bought them simply cuz they were the most expensive ones.

I can't believe that! And majority of MB drivers are rich middle-age to old men and women! I could understand if youngsters use fake badges.
What adout full AMG mods? I remember a friend of mine telling me that his neighbor sent 2 MB’s to a factory in Germany where full AMG mods are done but this included the engine.

My 2 uncles also said the same thing, that you could, at least the last time they went car shopping in Germany, have almost any MB turned into an AMG equivalent. This includes the engine.

Due to the cost, I would think very few people actually do this and most are fake. How many of these people are taking these cars and spending another $20,000.00+++ to get the whole package of real AMG work done? Not many I’m sure.
