Something caught my eye on the way home

Here I was crusin' home from work. As I pull up to a red light, there's a black Merc cab one lane over and one car in front of me, pretty eye catching. Now admittidly, I know little about the MB designations, but this two door cab had the CLK430 on the left side rear and the AMG on the right rear.

Here's the only pic I can find that looks close...

Naturally, we both eye ball each other and trade thumb's up, but in rush hour traffic, we do little else except hang next to each other. I guess he was sizing my M3 up as I was trying to size up his Merc.

So, I get home and try to find some specs on this beastie, but it seems rather difficult to track down. I can find lots of CLK430s on the web, but no real specs for an AMG version. Kinda hard to believe that this Merc has only 275 horses So did this dude throw an AMG badge on a CLK430 or is there a real AMG version of this 8-cylinder Merc out there?

Those are really nice cars but I think that was a fake, I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a CLK43 AMG. Normally it would be a CLK55 AMG. Here are the specs

Exactly what I was about to say. There's this guy that I see every morning on my commute to school, the back of his car says "E420 AMG." Obviously he doesn't know anything about his own car because first of all it's E55 if it was an AMG, and second of all if it really was an AMG, it would be about 2 inches lower and have completely different aerodynamics. Someday I'm gonna roll down my window and call him an asshole because he drives it like it's an AMG too.[mad]

I am finding a lot of people calling them AMG but they sure don't look like an AMG to me. I guess I may have been one that has been fooled by this. [B)] I am not sure because I have found 2 at MB dealerships that are being called AMG and to me they don't look at all like I would expect.

Vlad,

You are not alone...I saw an exact similar Mercedes model sometime last week and was wondering...what the hell is that CLK430 with an AMG badge??? I looked at the driver, he was in his late 40s, maybe early 50s. Didn't look like the type who would care to add a fake badge to his car! Well, since it was JUST a Mercedes...I didn't bother to check it up. Now that you mentioned...it can't be a coincidence (I'm in Florida), there must be such a model in the Mercedes line.

I don't think there is a CLK 430 AMG. I think I have been had [:I] [B)]

I was thinking that the V8 was an indication that it was an AMG but it was an option on all of them. It looks like what Vlad said, they just added some stuff.

Sorry, but I really did think there was an AMG. [:I]

I never realized Mercedes owners were faking the "AMG" like some bimmer owners fake the //M. By the way, I saw a fake M5 a few days ago. As I drove up on it, It was obvious to me it wasw a 528 sport package. He didn't even have any //M body works.

There was no such thing as an official AMG CLK430. They only had the CLK55. However, AMG makes the body parts, rims, etc. for the regular versions which you can order either from the factory or the dealer. Stickign an AMG sticker on a CLK430 is akin to putting an M badge on a BMW. If you notice, lots of BMW rims have the M logo on them, as well as steering wheels, etc. I think it only crosses the line if you put an M3 sign on a regular 3, but a regular 3 can legitimately have M logos if it has the M designed parts. Same with the Merc. As long as he left the 430 badge on there and has AMG parts (like the body kit that I believe comes standard on the 430 but not the 320), then he can legitimately have an AMG logo cuz he has AMG parts. Kinda poseurish like slapping an M logo on a regular 3, but technically legit.

most likely a dealer option to have the AMG badge put on with the purchase of say the AMG wheels and maybe a chip, ya never know. but everyone is right, its the CLK55 AMG. All AMG cars only have two numbers to designate engine size.
