some of these threads are really funny..................

I must of been a princess in high school since my Dad gave me his hand-me-down Ford Pinto Station Wagon..........[?|]

To show you how impressed to this day that he is about cars or anything materialistic, and he is ultimate rich, when I drove my brand new 330CIC to Tennessee last summer, we were riding around in the mountains with a brigade of Miata's on a tour ride.........he says, "What kind of car is this." I say, "Daddy, its a BMW." He says, "is it made by Toyota?" I still laugh about that conversation...........never get too big for your britches........somebody will bring you down to your roots............

Heck for 3k you can get a 88-89 325is, and have it running in good condition.. (Check auto trader!) This is truly the car I'm looking to purchase to build for the track. (Or a M3 in gooood condition.. Say, like that Red M3 in your sig!) [:)]

You're right, the kids won't hate me, but I'll think they do until I know they learned better.. [;)] But thats ok cause I know I'll know better. (Despite their thinking otherwise till they hit their 20's)..

BTW, that Red M3 of yours *really* is good looking.. *drool*

and don't say things like "they get out and go to burger king." it's phrases like that which make my girlfriends eat salads instead of some actual protein. sure, it's cheaper but it's embarrasing to say "i'll have the 4 lb steak, and the lady will have my side salad." don't get me wrong, i'm all for sexism[rofl] i just like my women to weigh over 80. anorexia is caused by phrases like that and the media...i also don't watch TV for similiar reasons.
NO...NO...you just love to blame everyone! Its not the quotes, its not the TV...those things are caused by individual weakness and ignorance or good ol'fashioned stupidity. I know you probably hate to hear this.

we have a winner. that may quite possibly be the stupidest thing i've heard all night. how could you possibly deny that the media influences children-especially girls. have you seen 10 year old girls?- they dress like britney spears. you know why? CUZ SHE'S IN THE MEDIA. it's not even questionable. further more after being proven terribly wrong, i dont' want another post regarding this issue as it is a BMW forum. if you really wanna squable, PM me and i'll be glad to prove you wrong further.[fake]

Geez, you're all lucky(young folks), to even *have* a car in high school. When I was young, (I promise it wasn't *that* long ago)it was a big deal to have your own car of any sort.. And it *used* to mean that you were working or providing for family that you needed a car in the first place.. Not that you just got the parents hand-me-down so they can go buy the sports car of their 2nd childhood..

I had my *mom* wreck my first car of all things(sweet little 81 civic), as I was doing the above (IE: working). Got a POS Mustang hatchback that was running on 3 of 4 cylinders.. All that while earning it, not waiting for a handout or for insurance to replace my *luxury* ride (Although the seats were comfy in the hatchback).. [:)]

My kids are gonna hate me, they sure aren't getting any hand-me-down cars, they're gonna work for em and buy em. (Ya know, EARN it)

And no I'm not 'hating' on you youngin's with bimmers, but you should show more humility and respect for people that actually bought their own (or bought any car for that matter), or the fact that *you* didn't. Enjoy your car, don't rub it in that mommy or daddy handed you the keys to a sports sedan.. And shut your piehole about where it came from in the first place, if you're not sharing a cool pickup story from Europe or from the factory or testing grounds here in the states, then just get over it..

Kids like this get dildo's and banana's in their exhaust (Do a search here if you're clueless about this one).. [:D]

*kicks soapbox under couch for later*

I agree, as well. My parents did buy me my Camaro when I was a freshman in high school and got me started on the restoration so that it would be somewhat safely driveable. After they bought the Camaro for me, I got a job, and it was totally my responsibility to finance the rest of the restoration as well as all costs of operation including gas as well as insurance. I am happy and proud to say that I have paid every penny of my insurance since the day I started driving. I got in two accidents in the Camaro, and every penny to fix the car came out of my pocket and my hard work. I can fully appreciate the amount of work it takes to be able to afford and take care of a car.

Now, I have learned more than I ever thought I would about cars and how they work and are put together. I am in medical school now, and the Camaro was going to need some work and is expensive to drive. It also requires periodic tinkering and tuning since I've got it fairly highly tuned - it's somewhat temperamental, especially in the cold. So, I bought myself my '87 Bimmer. Paid for it 100% myself. I absolutely love the car, and it really is a great source of pride to look at it sitting in the parking lot of my apartment and realize that I have worked hard and succeeded enough to be able to be the owner of a my own BMW.

I'm buying my car 110% with my own shitty little paycheck from staples. I have no money for anything, except car, insurance, and gas (which my parents are helping with insurance and gas until the car is paid off.)

I'm despirate to do some repairs and get a basslink for my car (I'm an audiophile and cant stand the absence of lower frequencies.) so I'm selling a bunch of my stuff on ebay.

Now I see you're really funny man. I got the condump of that game so if you want me to send it, it's fine with me (not gonna post it here, it's way to huge). I never said any bad word about Americans in that game. I don't even know what the words "foolish" and "petty" mean, so I have no clue how I could have even said them....
Oh, and why would I give Americans an compliment for driving BMW's if I should hate em? If I did I wouldnt have made a compliment like that. I mean, such a compliment is not nessacarilly (eeeh.... how you write it :S)

[/ontopic] Well you guys think this will be my first car. This car will be my second. My first car was a Volkswagen Golf VR6 (3th version) and I paid like 70-80% of it. My parents sponsored me the rest. So I know quite well how it hard it is to work for your own car. [/ontopic]

any car below $30,000 was (and still is, at that school) considered to be a piece of shit or just does not deserve any attention.
I’ve met celebrities, dignitaries and the extremely rich, from what I’ve experienced and IMO; money doesn’t equal class and respect is like trust, it’s earned not given.

Mom’s favorite quote since I was five, “I put food on the table, clothes on your back and a roof over your head, anything else you want you have to work for.” All only children are spoiled, YEAH RIGHT!!

settle down...who said all only children are spoiled? i didn't read that in here. no one ever eluded to the concept that the people getting free cars from their parents were only children. [driving]

To understand a man's mind, listen to his words....................

Ghost is an only child.........the concept that all "only child" is spoiled is a tongue in cheek.

sure, but ghost was the only one to bring it up. he's getting all defensive over nothing because nobody mentioned the phrase "only child" before he did.

its nice that parents can buy their kids cars or even just hand down a car, whether its a brand new or a used bmw, benz, etc. but if the kids all of sudden think they are the sh*t cuz they are driving around in a brand new CLK and want respect .... thats just sad. i agree with The Ghost on one thing - respect is earned

i'm lucky ... because instead of buying me a new car, my parents decided to put me through 4 yrs of Michigan college education ... go blue! (outta state for me, so its like 30K+ a year) and now that I graduated I just brought my own car ....

you are quite fortunate, but i feel that college is completely different from a sweet ride. your parents should encourage education, not street racing. i'm all for parents putting their kids through college. mine would have paid for my tuition had i decided (or should i still decide) that college is the right path for me. apples and oranges if you ask me, but congrats on graduating. what was your major?

I have had 3 cars thus far in my short 19 years. To be honest I needed a car. My parents divorced when I was 7 and I needed to commute back and fourth to school, friends, etc... both my parents worked, so they were useless for rides. My great grandmother (may she rest in peace) gave me a 1985 Buick Skylark. I drove that thing for 8 months, and quite frankly all the rich people in my dads neighborhood hated seeing the old rusty thing out in the driveway.

One day I came out and my basketball hoop was on the trunk of the car leaving a dent and cracking one of the plastic side moldings on the trunk... vandalism? I think so...

I never was too proud of the old thing, but it never gave me any big trouble. It was the first car I changed oil on, frist car I replaced pads and rotors on, first car I changed out plugs too. I leanred a little off that car, and then my dad donated it.

Next on the list was a 1994 Chevy Camaro. It was a V6 model, and frankly was quite the pusy at high speed. I replaced rotors, pads, plugs, plug wires, O2 sensors on that car, as well as an alternator and serpentine belt. I leanred a lot off that car about replacing stuff.

Finall I sold that car for my 1995 Ford Taurus SHO. I havent done much on this car except oil changes, a serp belt, and a starter.

As fasr as kids knowing stuff about cars I feel that 95% of 16-24 year olds don't know shit about cars, proper maintenence, and overall care for their cars. They drive them until they break (usually severly).

The fast and the furious movies made kids want to think they knew everything about performance and cars in general. This is so far from the truth. I run into kids all the time with home made cold air intakes and they're right by their echaust manifolds... SO I ask them how this gelps perfromance and they say it flows in cold air and it flows more air in... well then I say why is it by your exhaust manifolds that are pushing 400 degrees when they could've kept the stock airbox and had cold air drawn in through the fender...

At this point these kids get frustrated that they're total n00bs when it comes to cars and perfromance. I mean large plug wires on cars that aren't boosted don't really do shit. 3.5 inch exhaust on normally apsirated cars results (usually) in performance LOSES...

Which is why these people can't be reasoned with. They're part of the mentality that every mod you do is going to get out performance. They don't use their head. The only way to battle them is with knowledge, and sadly the smart ones are about 1 in 100 when it comes to cars...
