Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, so I thought I would post it. The 2006 M5 (maybe the regular 5 series too) and the Lexus IS 350 look almost identical. Besides a few minor details, and maybe the front headlights, they are very similar. Any thoughts or opinions?
They copied more than that. Look at the interior and you will see they have new this year a push button start and paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.
I spoke to the guy who use to own my M3 (Traded in on an Imola Red on Red M3), and traded in his IS 300 for the new one. He picked it up this Saturday, but I haven't seen it yet. He states they are very nice....
My nephew has one (Lexus) and he loves it. I have not seen it but you are correct they do look a lot alike. I never asked him why the Lexus v the BMW, he has owned BMW's in the past. Next time we talk I'll ask him that question.
This is the main reason why I hate Asian cars, but all in all I think Lexus is un-godly overpriced, for what you get for performance, handling, they simply are not worth the money, all Toyota does with Lexus is glorifies a Toyota, its pathetic.
I laughed when I saw a comercial and then realized the car was a Lexus in the end. So much for originality. Bimmer styling with Japanese reliability? Unfortunately they based it on one of the newer BMW designs.

Toyota's aren't that reliable anymore, in fact they have gotten much worse in the last 3 years, they are built as good as VW, and I mean the ones built in Mexico. OoOo bad comparison.
Lexus always copies BMW... The IS for some reason has an I6 with 200+hp, RWD, 17' wheels, and its even the same size... (3-series feature-clone)
Did you see the new commercial for the RX with it's "rain sensing windshield wipers" in the rain forest demonstration? Also the " xenon-bright headlights that swivel with the curves" on the dark road at night. They even showcase the "start/stop button" which looks identical to BMW in labeling, size, and location on the dashboard. It seems they even adopted the flat dashboard style and "sheetmetal" doors. Seems as if Bangle really is setting the example.
I wonder why BMW never demonstrates the features of their cars in commericals, they seem to sell the name brand and it's handling/performance. While Lexus tricks the unsuspecting consumer into believing they have just invented the latest cutting edge technology, when BMW has been rather silently offering it as a standard option for years...
Blah blah blah, Lexus builds great cars and the new IS350 is no exception. Fully loaded for $44K you get all the stuff you do in a 330i (even more, with technology and features) plus a 306hp engine. It is a great value and a great car.

A great value and perhaps a well built car, but one without originality... But apparently that's all that consumers care about, I guess one can view the Lexus as a generic BMW only without some of BMWs quirks and probably better reliability.

I agree the feature copying is disturbing, especially when they advertise the BMW technology as if it was their own innovation. They might build reliable quality cars, but there is still no excuse for copy-cat syndrome.
Come to think of it, even BMW could build ultra-reliable cars if they created a seperate brand and fine tuned everything they made, which is exactly what Lexus did, or rather hijacked (along with lowering the price).
I am terribly sorry for not being close-minded, and my parents both drive German vehicles. The RX300 is for my brother, and I appreciate the Pilot when the weather is bad or I just need more room.
