What really got on my nerves is that the Chrysler was above the 5. Have any of you guys seen that thing in real life yet? It's disgusting. The interior is so cheap and ugly, I thought it would be some sort of high-end sedan but it turns out the cheapest one is somewhere around $23,000. I think the design looks alright though. I also don't understand the current hype about the pushrod engine, the concept of the pushrod is about 40 years old.

One more thing, here's C/D's numbers for the E320 and the 530i.

2004 BMW 530i
===========
Price as tested ($).........56,145
0-60/Qrt. Mile (sec)........6.7/15.2
Top Speed (mph)...........149
Braking, 70-0 (ft)...........167
Road Holding (g)............0.90
EPA City (mpg)...............20

2003 Mercedes E320
===============
Price as tested ($).........54,020
0-60/Qrt. Mile (sec)........7.4/15.8
Top Speed (mph)...........131
Braking, 70-0 (ft)...........166
Road Holding (g)............0.84
EPA City (mpg)...............19

I am tellin you guys....join the military, or get a GS civilian job. My 530i has the sport Package, the xenon, the cold weather, park distance control, premium sound and premium packages and steptronic I paid 44, 840 dollars NEW. When I went to MB dealership here and got a Quote on the E320 with the same or comparable options, I was 60,000+ and that was with a 15% military tax free reduction.

IDRIVE is not complicated, IDRIVE is NOT complicated. It sure beats the hell out of trying to find individual buttons randomly placed on the dashboard. I do feel it could be a little more useful, like a screen that shows battery amps and engine temp and that kind of use ful info. I understand that EVERYONE has their OWN opinion. It just takes some getting used to. I love that 530i, way more than my 98 528i or my 1995 benz E220. The only delima I am having these days is I think I may have acted prematurly in purchasing the Bimmer. I love my Bimmer, but that new Audi A6 is a force to be reckoned with. I am really considering trading IN....don't really think it would be trading UP.

I thought about trading down........Gas is killing me right now due to the 1.20euro/liter price versus 0.94euro/liter of diesel. Maybe I will get a SEAT Topsport or a used 320d for around 20,000euro......sigh.....little bit off topic but i am venting.

There are a lot of E320 and BMW 5er(E60) being sold and driving along the autobahns of germany. And from a personal viewpoint the lines of the E320 just look better to me. But both cars are good cars let us not forget that.

You've got to be kidding me. 5th Place!?! Damn, Bangle. It's not Motor Trend. In comparing the 545 to the E500, this months Roundel practically fawned over the Mercedes' design. And that's our club magazine!

Here's hoping vanHooydonk is a facelift maestro!!! A car should have a face, but it shouldn't look like a drag queen. Let's hope he's not into cutesy smiles and crazy eyebrows.

yeah I think BMW needs to hire the Mercedez designer.... although I do love the design of the next 3 series coming out... the 5 is fugly, 6 needs to be more futuristic... though I bet I'm one of the few people here that actually likes the new 7 compared to the old "boxey" 7 I think the 5 series is what brings down BMW the most

Adrean8j............what's the verdict on the ride man...I cried for ya. You have a beautiful ride.

It will cost my insurance 4000euro to fix but I will have to wait to get the money together for my 500euro deductable and I had to drop 230euro for my "olabscheider" to get fixed. Plus my normal car payment, plus my quarterly insurance payment was due this month, plus rent, plus rental car while my car got fixed....not to mention gas and other things.......sigh....bad month for me! [:(]

Sorry again man......I know you love your car like I love mine, mine cost over 10,000 euro to fix. probably 'cause it is a 2004. You could have done some shopping around and found someone to up the fix it price by 500 euro and that would have covered the deductable. If a company wants the business, they WILL bend to your requests.....I did it.

What do you mean by "up" the fix it price by 500euro? That would come out to 4500 and I would still have to pay my 500 out of pocket. I have never had to make a claim before so I am pretty green on the whole subject...... [???1]

You have the shop bid you 4500, which is 500 more than the total cost, your insurance pays 4000...the entire cost. You don't give your insurance the 500 euro deductable, you hypathetically give the shop the money. Your insurance will pay everything minus the 500 deductable. This way the shop is getting the full amount without you paying the 500 euro. Are getting me?

and if the insurance company wants receipt of services from the shop(s)?
It would be a first. Insurance adjusters have better things to do than pursue a 4000 settlement. 40,000 maybe. I am telling you, try it, shop around and see if you have any takers. Don't forget I am in Germany with you.

iDrive takes a bit to get used to, I fumbled with it in a few cars I test drove a few weeks ago during BMW's cure for cancer tour they did. After a bit I got it down, and was blinking through menus w/o even looking at the screen really. And this was in a 530i w/ 6 spd stick, so it was alot of work to be shifting and idriving. It wasn't that bad once you do it.

As for the design and look. Well, it's growing on me. Personally I can't wait until it gets a 'facelift' and they fix the lights, and lighten it's a** a bit. Other then that, it certainly handled like a BMW should, the new drive system in the 5 series was something else to get used to (I could spin the wheel with a hair, it was 'different' compared to normal BMW steering). Course with a bodykit, some better wheels/tires, a new 5 can be just as desireable (if not moreso) than a older 5. (I liked Hamann's redone 5, it was blisteringly hot..)

I think gathering from all the Bangled newer models, their costs (and rising costs) and various models coming out, that they are not making the 5 to be 'sporty' anymore like it used to be, but more of a real 'sedan'. The new 1/2 and 3/4 series cars still look very sporty, even with a bangle influence.
I'm going to be a happy camper in 1-2 years when the new M2 comes out. [:D]

I didn't read all the posts, but I have the R&T magazine right here on my desk. I think the comparison wasn't really fair. The Cadillac CTS and Chrysler 300 both should not be there...they are more like 3-series competitors. I'm glad that the Volvo came in last. I don't think the CTS should have came in 1st place beacuse it doesn't look that hot...it looks like an armored car. I think the BMW probably should have come in 1st. iDrive is easy as pie to use...people who can't use iDrive are just retarded, it is like the easiest thing I have ever used in my life. If you know how to read and you know how to turn a knob, you can operate iDrive. I say this with a lot of personal experience with my uncle's 745Li.
Sure, the exterior styling is purely subjective to personal taste, but what are the other cons of the car? The interior is beautiful, iDrive is easy as pie, and I bet it still drives like a BMW....what more do you want?

The CTS and 300C are 3 series competitors in price only. Size-wise, they're 5 series competitors. Those are the facts. So they've got a price advantage. The BMW and other more expensive cars should be able to make it up in performance, luxury, etc.

Agreed.

I'm going to step off the ledge here and go so far as to say the new 5er is absolutely hideous.

It excels at instantly turning any buyer into a driving fashion victim. You couldn't pay me to own that car (no more than you could pay me to wear acid wash jeans in the '80s…and don't tell me it was the performance of those jeans that went overlooked).

More "hideous" than the CTS or the 300? You are aware that repeated use of crack cocain can have long lasting side effects! Aside from the corvette, Americans make some of the ugliest, freak of nature, gas guzzling monsters on the road.

Mine may have turned me into a "driving fashion victim" so I guess it is good that 99% of the other drivers only have to see the rear end...and that only for a few seconds. I LOVE MY NEW 530i.

Dont be mad tool fan....fact of the matter is that MOST existing and former BMW owners dont love the look of the new 5er. Fact of life dont take it personal. I have a E39 and I like the lines on it better than the E60. I wouldnt go as far as to say that it is "hideous" but not as pretty as a E39. Those headlights have to go.........makes it look to much like a pontiac grand prix in the front. If anyone doesnt believe me check back issues of ROUNDEL they actually have a picture of the two cars side by side from the front. Or it looks like a larger version of a Z3's front end.....lol!

Yeah , I know not to wear my heart on my sleeve, but it is almost as if the haters are talking bad about my mom or something. Makes me mad HAHAHAHA, I am having fun though. That is what makes a great forum.........THE ABILITY OF PEOPLE TO DEBATE A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE WITHOUT KILLING EACH OTHER.
