This post is inspired by the most recent issue of Road and Track where the new 5 series took 6th place out of 7. also if you read into the correspondance part, everyone hates on bmw. what is the deal? it seems like there is a ton of BMW hate going around right now, what is the deal? has anyone else seen the R&T?

exterior looks like crap, interior clunky and in the way (helloooo idrive), lack of feel for the road, quality issues, theyre brand new models and not refined yet, etc.

more than enough to not like the new line up

I absolutely LOVE my BMW and would never drive anything but a BMW. But I hate the new BMW's with a passion. Ok, so if Honda makes an ugly car no one cares, because all their cars are ugly. BMW is expected to turn out the best, and when they totally throw away their design heritage and make cars that look like crap that is a reason to hate them. I hate them for destroying what used to be such an incredible name. I'm sure they will come around in the end and start producing incredibly beautiful cars again, but for now, I hate the new BMWs and would rather have an e30 M3 than any new M5 or M6.

The article was fair. I love my BMW. I think it's absolutely great. I've also been in the new 5. It basically is the antithesis of everything I love about my BMW. Well, it's still a BMW in name like mine, but everything else is the opposite of why I love my car.

Don't really read EVO or Car, but I used to subscribe to Automobile and European Car. They really aren't any better than C&D, MT, and R&T. The British BMW magazines are much better.

yes I did. real flimsy. but kinda a cool design so I called it a wash. It was the quality of the interior materials that made me very disappointed. It was next to an E39 5 series so I got to directly compare it. Eventually the newness is gonna wear off and I hope BMW survives.

I dunno I guess I can like some of the new models. Like when AC Schnitzer redo them they come out looking a bit more stylish [xx(]. In any case its not only BMW whos doing remodeling, look at Mitsubishi's concept cars [hihi]. And as for Honda, my friend is a Honda kid and we had a little discussion over this whole ordeal, he had me pinned, thanks Bangle [8].

Lets just enjoy the good times while we can [drinking]

Ironic... this morning my friend and I were skipping part of school and he had that R&T in his car. I opened it up and started flipping through the pages, when I found that comparo I nearly went insane. What a bunch of SHIT! I spent about 40 minutes bitching about how the entire magazine is against BMW, which is true. How in the hell does a Chrysler outdo a BMW? My ass... all I can say is that magazine is pure dog shit. They didn't even bother testing the manual but instead the automatic, I can tell you right now that there was some sort of deal involved between R&T and some other worthless corp. like GM. Don't like the looks? Fine. But there's no way in hell a CTS, a Chrysler, and whatever the hell else there was can beat a BMW in handling, ride comfort, etc..

Bottom line is: Road & Track is full of it.

You've got to be kidding me. 5th Place!?! Damn, Bangle. It's not Motor Trend. In comparing the 545 to the E500, this months Roundel practically fawned over the Mercedes' design. And that's our club magazine!

Here's hoping vanHooydonk is a facelift maestro!!! A car should have a face, but it shouldn't look like a drag queen. Let's hope he's not into cutesy smiles and crazy eyebrows.

VanHooydonk or whatever his name is is just as responsible for the new ugly BMW designs as Bangle is. Not much hope for the future there.

You may wanna bash R&T for ranking the BMW so low, but they're just calling them like they see em. Everyone else has been accusing ALL the major magazines for being Honda and BMW biased. Honda's started producing some odd looking cars (Accord anyone?) but at least the interior design and quality of materials has stayed good. Performance has gotten better too. BMW took a big step down with its 5 series. Performance, quality, looks, everything. All those new fangled tech features don't work as well as they had hoped. Our E320 has niggling things that bother me and I wanted to bash it with the 5, but I can't. The 5 really is an inferior car overall compared to the E.

I havent seen the article in question but I must say that I agree with many who who feel that the new Bangle BMW designs (and execution) are the antithesis of what BMW is all about. This is such a shame. I think BMW is making a major mistake abandoning its roots of performance orientation without bells and whistles. (Of course I know that many old timers even think this about the last few iterations...understood..but these current incarnations are just too much IMO) - maybe we will all get used to them (the styling) one day...but I don't think we will ever get over the bloat factor. I've always admired BMWs for their simplicity of purpose and execution - their being able to pull off being a drivers (sport) car while maintaining practicality...but these new cars - well they are more like Mercedes and (eech) Lexuses...what more can I say - yeech. And while purchasing a 330 now - admitedly an older design - caused me some hesitation - I am so glad to be able to get something that is a bit more in tune with what I look for in a car -- and with the future designs - who knows...

The exterior of the new 5 has too many angles and looks a little too much like the new caddys, but its not that bad. The i-drive is plain stupid. It requires additional steps. Not very functional. Interior has taken a step backwards IMO.

Glad I got the E39 in my garage. It might just be perfection.

Honda? Interior design nice? Are you joking? Honda has been making the same crap quality interiors for over 10 years, your common cheap-feeling Chinese built plastic buttons usually found in American cars. Also, calling the 5 an overall inferior car to the E is like blasphemy. I'm positive that if you put an E320 vs. a 530i on a track the 530 would run laps around it. Plus BMWs can actually KEEP building incredibly reliable cars while Mercedes is going down the drain. Unless you're 60+, just an idiot, or enjoy driving a 300+ hp car that has limiters on everything, I think that choosing a Mercedes over a BMW equivalent is just dumb.
