What the hell? What does the fact that 70% of American cars are automatics have anything to do with this discussion? You go from talking about Grand Am Racing prepped race cars to saying that 70% of production American cars are autos, and they therefore suck. I'd venture to say that nowadays close to 80% of BMWs that come to the states are autos (unless they are specifically ordered by the customer configured as a manual). I guess that means BMWs suck. [rolleyes] When I went to look at new C-class Mercedes a few months back, the dealer didn't have a single manual on either the new or used lot, and he said they don't get any in unless the customer specifically places a factory order for one with a manual transmission. Guess that means Mercedes suck too. [rolleyes]

Plus, if you had any REAL knowledge about drag racing, you'd KNOW that an automatic transmission is almost ALWAYS a better choice over a manual. In fact, some of the fastest drag cars on the planet use a Powerglide transmission (a GM TWO-speed automatic), but I'm sure you already knew that since you are clearly an expert. I used to drag race my Camaro back in college at the very active local track, and it is obvious to me that you have no real knowledge of what the sport is. Driver skill plays a VERY large part in success on the 1/8 or 1/4 mile. So, instead of telling us to use facts to make our claims, don't pretend to be an expert about things of which you know little.

With all that your just being a literal idiot, with regarding the drag racing your totally missing my point. Drag racing COMPAIRED with Road,Auto Cross, and Curcuit Racing needs less skill. Its all engine, if you had a kick ass engine and some high spec trans, auto in your case, a person could be replaced with a brick. A human driver, whick can see, feel, and THINK, has to think out the racing line etc. The fact that your getting on my case about transmissions clearly means you do not understand. And don't be a literal bastard about what cars are American or not. Your just being immature, but your definition, any car sold in America is an American car- which is just stupid.
And no I'm not an expert, I'm just not stupid

So you're saying the standing start of a forumla one race - which is basically a drag race - doesn't usually determine who will be in the top 3 at the end of the race? Hahaahahahaha [fake]

You make a very good point, all Mercedes AMG vechicles, where the lowest hp is 342horse, have automatics. No amg has a manual tranny, you could do a renntech conversion for 20 grand, but thats not worth it now is it. Its not like 10 years ago where auto trannys were slow, undecided and always in the wrong gear. Nowadays the ecu learns your driving style, and has different programs for a specific type of driving ( like in my ML55. ) For instance, If i am accelerating hard, I let off the gas, the tranny wont shift, it awaits when I reapply the power, so that I still have the same burst of energy I want. Id say the shifts are as quick as a manual tranny...

Yeah but that doesn't matter. A person still makes the best decisions because a person is aware of everything going on with the road or the track and can bring the most out of the car in any given environment. The AMG transmission isn't a big deal...BMW's auto trannies in Sport mode have been able to hold the lower gear to keep the engine in the power band (when you let off the accelerator), and it has been this way for years. You can even tap the throttle under braking when the transmission is downshifting for smoother and sportier shifts.
Thanks to locking torque converters, smart programming, the ability to rev-match on donwshifts, manual shift mode, and other other features, automatic transmissions are great and can be used on a track just fine.
Nowadays when getting a new car, you simply go with the manual transmission because it is more enjoyable to drive and it brings out the car sooo much more.

The bmw was roughly 6 or so cars back [hatchet] . It was a fun race . Working to put together video. Im buying new back tires with money for my car.
