I thought at first this would be horrible for both British brands, but after reading an in-depth article in the Los Angeles Times about the Tata family, and their companies...I think it will be very good for Jaguar and Land Rover. India (due to it's colonization) is very "British", and the Tata group has already stated they are not planning any layoffs, and plan to let both companies stay 100% British, as that is their heritage and selling point.

Yes, Land Rover has horrible reliability....but Jaguar routinely scores higher that both BMW and Mercedes in Luxury car reliability, customer satisifaction and total ownership costs.

The Tata group knows a helluva lot more about British cars and British sensibility than Ford!!!

My hunch is this will damage the "prestige" factor of these two brands
to a fatal extent...
Most people have no idea Ford owned Jag and Land Rover so they won't know Tata owns them now. Hell, a lot of Americans don't even know Ford owns Mercury. It'll be interesting to see what happens. I think they'll do allright. Maybe Tata will produce a cheap, durable Land Rover for India, then export it around the world. I think Land Rover really needs something like that to prop up their reputation.

My parents Jag was in the shop so much they sold it CHEAP, while it was still in the shop for its constant electrical repairs. My nephew sold his Rover because he could not keep oil in the thing, it leaked out the valve covers like a fountain.

Yeah, Land Rovers (new and old) are a big upkeep. Was your parent's Jag older than the mid or late 1990's? Jaguar for at least 10 years has been excellent, as many friend's and associates have them. But, yeah...the older Jags were a mechanical and electrical MESS.

I read that several industry analysts claim this is mostly an "ego trip" purchase by Tata. They say that from a financial viewpoint, it could be a bad move for Tata.
