I don't want to get too argumentative, but that sounds like a very lame (not to mention, inaccurate excuse). VW's Touareg is built entirely in Slovakia, as is most of Porsche Cayenne (I think they put the engine in Germany so they can still say it's "Made in Germany"). And the Touareg is one of VW more reliable cars, depsite being loaded with acronym-derived electronic gizmos. To say that M-B's recent problems stem from "outsourcing" is a plain fallacy. Ever consider that maybe poorly engineered and poorly-thought-out (ah yes, the Deutsch are fallible after all--need I say something about their fragile economy?) electronics are at fault, and not poorly built ones??
Also, Lexus/Toyota have several plants scattered around Central and Eastern Europe (largely Poland and Czech Republic) and some of those plants produce everything from electronics to engines, and there a few assembly lines there too. Honda has a few plants in Poland, I believe, and is planning more. And need I say that the Japanese are making strong inroads in Europe thanks to their wonderful quality AND reliability.
Speaking of pushing the technological envelope, why do the Japanese have such few problems. Sure they may not be known as innovators, but the recent Lexus GS is very technologically-advanced, and I haven't, nor do I expect to, read any complaints about a decrease (or expected decrease) in reliability. Infiniti's right up there too with it's new M35/45, and to lesser extent with the FX and G35.
C'mon guys. Wake up and smell the coffee: BMW's not doing something right. It's not the "holy grail" of the automotive world. About 5 to 7 years ago, you'd be hard pressed to find a negative word aimed at BMW. Nowadays, car magazines are filled with negativity towards BWW--criticizing everything from styling to--yes--driving dynamics and build quality!! You can't just build a good driving car nowadays and say the rest doesn't matter or isn't as important...
