I saw a new VW Phaeton with dealer plates at the grocery store. Very nice I think. I like it better than the new 5 mainly because of the lights. But at $65,000.00 base price there is no way, I would still go with a 540. I say 5 because to me that looks like the closest completion based on size. It will be interesting to see how well it does but I wonder if VW will have problems in the $70 range where their average vehicle is in the 20’s, and on the lower side at that.

I agree, even though it supposed to be VW's attempt to move up the luxury scale, $65k for a VW is just way too much.

I really didn't think these would sell that much, but I saw THREE of them running around in the snow the other night (they have AWD) !! I would seriously never pay the $70K or whatever it costs, just to have a VW badge.

I wouldn't pay that much for a VW either. I gotta hand it to them though, they did an incredible job with it. No details have been skipped and everything is extremely high-quality.

Much rather have an Audi A8. Comes with Quattro so it can run around in the snow if needed too. That price point is just ridiculous. Competes with it's corporate cousin without the cache of a luxury name tag. I think it only exists cuz Dr. Piech and the other VW head honchos were sick of driving Golfs and Polos to meetings while other people in the group get A8s and Lambos and such.

VW owns AUDI (and PORSCHE) and AUDI owns LAMBORGHINI
VW may have built the company on affordable cars, but with the way the times have changed I think their quality may have increased along with their stock. I think our knowledge and history of cars gives us the feeling of, “ It’s still just a VW ” yet in reality it seems that they put much more quality and engineering in this car than some other car companies that attempt to enter the luxury car market. Unfortunately for VW they already had an established reputation and we all remember the original BUG and sometimes that’s from where our opinion is based. Personally if it doesn’t have then blades in the sky, it is a car that I won’t buy.

I have the top gear episode, this car is the same kind of class as the 7 series. Some of the technology in there is just awesome. Anti Fog windows. ( JC litteraly brews tea in the car and it dosent fog) the car can go about 201mph without the limiter on, and a 2 door version is expect to go out.

I agree with them doing a good job on the lux with the car, the name just does not have the prestiege of a lux car, that is what will bite them in the rear. Don't get me wrong, I like VW....but when you say, "Hey, I just got done paying out my ass for a new luxury car, guess what it is.....a Volkswagen....!" Looks too much like a overpriced Passat. The INTERIOR IS SWEET though, lots of toys, does not justify the price for the make though. Just my opinion.[;)]

The Phaeton is a nice looking car. The top of the line Pheaton has been taged $94,600. lieke-ouh-maa-gawd!
VW and Audi are just about the same car anyway, why in the hell pay that much when you can get an A8?!
BUT, VW is a top notch quality car company, blowing any american car maker out of the water.

Well, except for the Passat with the 2.0L engine that I owned......damn should have got the VR6, I trade in cars too much. Wish they would have kept the Corrado....that was pretty nice. For the price of the Pheaton.....guess you can no longer call it "The Peoples Car"[;)]

Does anyone know if there are any differences between 4Motion and Quattro?
Ya the name, I am perty sure most all 4 wheel drive systems are the same. They probably just changed the name to make it sound like its something new.

As for the car itself, I saw it in person and I like it. Its not that over priced when you compare it to the BMW 7 and Mercedes S series. Lots of gadgets inside [:)]

Actually, Volkswagen means peoples car in German.......[;)]

I kinda miss my 1970 VW bug though, that thing was so easy to fix. And yep, the Corrado was sweet. I have seen a few many years ago, never see them anymore.....wonder why.[???1]

BMW is doing the same thing VW is doing only in reverse. I'm talking the "one" series here. I think that VW is on to something. People love German cars and will pay premium prices. BMW and Mercedes were high end brands so they had to come down to have a full line. VW was a low end brand so they are going up to have a full line. I'll bet this move will pay off for them.
