NOPE!! Even the E46 M3 uses single pistons up front (check the ETK!!) It surprises me too BUT the reason bmw can do that and still have absolutely amazing brakes is that the calipers themselves are HUGE.

this is correct, there is actually no proof that the more pistons you brake calipers have the better. in fact, more calipers leads to a simptom called "pad knockback."
