I don't think it is age either, I think it is maturity! And yes you learn what you live. Both my parents were/are very good drivers and passed respect and discipline down to their children. I drove truck, coast to coast for four years, than drove a police car for 22 years and was never in an accident in either case. (havn't had a citation in over 30 years) I love fast cars, but have the discipline to know when and where. Also attentativeness, being alert, watching the other guy. You may be good, but if you aren't paying attention some idiot will pull out in front of you, or change a lane on you, or fail to stop, etc and kill you.
