that is not a diesel engine. first, the muffler at a diesel is bend down. at least here in germany they have to be like it. and i don´t think they develop a special muffler for the US. second, as MrE said, the revs are not those of a diesel.

regarding the speedo, it doesn´t say anything about the speed capability as all bmws are restricted to 250 kph. I truly believe we are seeing the 335 turbo here [thumb]

I agree Tim, and yes our mufflers for Diesel bend down here too....Mercedes & VW.

Currently purchasing NEW diesels is not allowed in 5 US states (CA & NY being two of them). If we ever get low sulfur Diesel fuel here, then Diesels will be allowed here.

It is just a big political pile of crap. You can go out and buy some enormous polluting Dodge, Ford or Chevy Diesel Truck that spews black soot every time you barely touch the gas pedal...but a super clean BMW or Mercedes diesel sedan is not allowed...which are actually cleaner than a lot of American gas engines.

Again, we can say Thank You Mr. Bush for your wisdom [:)]

Anyone think it'll possibly be the M3? It would be so stupid to make a 335 turbo/twin-turbo. Even if it has 100hp/liter (which is low for a FI car...) that's 350 hp!! The M3 would have to be an absolutely insane car to make it worth more than the "335i turbo"

If I'm wrong then I'm wrong, but I think it's stupid if they make a 335i turbo and don't find it logical at all.

BTW Mr Elu why would they make diesels illegal? What about VW Jetta and Passat diesels? The reason I asked was I never knew they were illegal, (BTW I'm not being sarcastic?)
As deutsch100 mentioned, diesel vehicles are illegal to sell in certain states, two of them being New York and California (I do not know the other states). Dealerships in these states cannot sell diesel vehicles and people who reside in these states cannot purchase or own diesel vehicles. These few states have this law for emissions/pollution reasons.

Guys the turbo 335i is coming. Really it does make sense; if the M3 is going to be a V8 with 400+hp then the gap between it and the 330i is pretty substantial. Additionally, the expected the gap in price of the M3 vs a 330i will also be pretty large.

The 335i will fill the gap and ensure that BMW will remain competitve in the performance sedan market. I know the purists will not like it (the turbo that is), even I prefer a NA I6 or a good V8, but lets give it a chance. This combination should have some very interesting potential.

You actually can own Diesel vehicles in CA and NY...dealers just cannot sell NEW Diesel vehicles. If the car is 1 year old, and has 7 or 10,000 miles on it, it can be brought into the 5 states that do not allow diesels. They can be registered and driven legally. We have had 2 diesel Benzes (recently)...a 300TD and a 300D 2.5 TurboDiesel....all legal and registered.

P.S.

If these states were so concerned with emissions and pollution why can the "Big 3" still sell new gigantic Diesel trucks...that are about as efficient and clean as a 25 year old Grumann Bus???

Wow, thanks for the info deutsch, I just thought it was pretty much completely illegal. As for the big trucks, I believe that the rules are very different for commercial vehicles vs private vehicles.

Welcome :)

I meant passenger trucks....Diesel Expeditions, F Series Diesel, Cummins Diesel Dodge!!! I see them every day here. They are so completely inefficient compared to German and Swedish Diesel engines for cars. A lot of new Diesel engines with particle filters are cleaner than a lot of new gas engines...and for sure cleaner than the "BIG 3" diesel passenger trucks (non-commerical).

It just seems hypocritical and a double standard.

Becuase despite the seats and dvd players and etc., they are still considered light duty trucks. In fact you get get rebates and tax deductions if you can justify the purchase of the vehicle for a business or for your job....

Wadula,

diesel engines do not all have bent down exhausts. Check the new 535d. I guess it all depends depends on having a particle filter or not. With a filter the chanches of a blacked out rear bumper are not so big anymore.

Grtz
