I'm just looking for unlimited internet access with a mobile phone. Does anyone besides Sprint offer a plan without spending $100 a month or paying per minute charges?
I might be able to get you a decent plan through staples... I'll check on friday if it's not too late..

As for in the US, with unlock phones, you can pop in any sim card from any carrier (ATT, CINGULAR, etc.) and you will be able to use it, since its not locked to any particular company (thats what companies here do to keep their customers and milk some more $$ from you). If you do not travel much out the country and is satisfied with your carrier, then just get the free phones from the companies. but if you travel quite a bit, its worth the money to buy a good tri-band phone (some times not even offerred in the US) ... may be expensive to buy at first but worth it in the long run!
Uh, when I checked w/ Sprint (my current carrier), they said I had to buy a Sprint phone, not just any phone will work. Were they yanking my chain?

nope, you must buy a phone that works with sprint service to use sprint. Other companys use some of the same technologys, so certain company's phones may work with another company's service. There are many different types of service, tdma, cdma, gsm are the main ones. Currently most networks have switched to gsm, offers faster internet. So if two companys use gsm then their phones can be interchangable. Sprint uses Cdma technology which is the same as Verizon. As I said in an earlyer post, Verizon mostly uses the same phones as sprint so there is no benifit. Bottom line no you must buy a sprint phone to use sprint.

i personally do not have Sprint plan so I don't know if they use GSM or not (with the sim card)? If you have & currently using sim cards, the little chip that you put in before putting the battery, you can put it in any "UNLOCKED" (very important!) phone and it will work. (as long as the phone is compatible with the US System. Some phones are only designed for Japan/Asia, Europe.)

I just brought an Unlocked Sony Ericsson Z600 phone. My brother has cingular, I have ATT and my mom has T-Mobile. We all have our own sim card and it works, simply just pop the sim card into the unlocked phone and it should do the trick.

Some of the current GSM phones you have can be unlocked also. you just need to code or whatever. say for instance you really like your cool phone but its stuck with a carrier, you can have it unlocked by an independent store and take the phone with you to a new carrier.

I have the Sprint T608 and bluetooth in my X5 it works perfectly except it will not download your phone book from your phone to the car. If I get this to work I will repost.

Too cool! My dealer was a bit apprehensive about installing it for this phone since BMW doesn't list that specific model as being compatible.

Mind if I ask how much you paid for the install?

It also depends on what band the provider is using in your market. My friend with an unlocked SE P800 (GSM 900/1800/1900) is on AT+T which uses GSM 1900 in my area. My Cingular chip will not work in his phone (at least not here anyway) because Cingular uses GSM 800 in this market and 1900 in someother markets so my cingular chip in his phone is looking for a GSM 800 signal in a phone that isn't compatable with GSM800. My SIM chip will seek for GSM 1900 if GSM 800 isn't available in that market (roaming) but it won't seek GSM1900 when it's in his unlocked phone.
The new quad band (800/900/1800/1900) are just coming out and should provide true world wide use.
