My first car was a 1986 Saab 9000 turbo. I beat the S*^T out of that thing. It broke down on me... once over 100k miles that I drove it. And that just happened to be the alternator going during a judging at an IASCA compitition. I sold the car to a friend when it had 220k miles on it (original clutch btw).
He drove it out to Denver and was travelling 100+ mph on the highway for good portions of time out there. (Car could still hit 140mph pretty easily) Car finally ended up dying when he avoided an accident and hit the front right tire into a curb and broke the control arm and did other damage. (repairs were worth more than the car).
My next car which I still own is a 1996 Saab 900 Turbo. Fun car, but has broken down on me quite a few times. Direct Ignition went, just recently the serpentine belt shredded off (this was actually a mistake done by the mechanic that had just recently replaced it. i found out he put the belt on wrong.) Also, the clutch is controlled by a cable, its not hydraulic on that year, and that has broken on me twice! So that sux.. But besides that there have been some maintenence costs, but honestly, the car has been good to me, and will easily last the 200k+ miles range, so its a great work/winter beater. Not much else to say, I mean honestly, it doesn't compare at all to my 03' M3. but hey, what car would?
Oh and yes, the resale value is horrible. It's not even worth me selling the car at this point, I might as well just keep it till it blows up....
