You sure there was no wall behind the pile. Glad the airbag didn't pop out!
If hitting a snow wall that only ripped a fog light off would've made the airbag go off, then I sure as hell hope he never hit a big pot hole before...

The last job I had I was working as a construction inspector on a huge airport job. The company gave me a brand new Silverado to drive around in but it didn't have 4WD which I really needed. So to get through thick mud and sand I just floored it, hoping I had anough speed to carry me through. Usually there were rocks under all that mud and so the bottom of the truck got trashed. I ripped the exhaust off one time!

Naturally, I took it off-roading--there's nothing more fun than beating on someone else's vehicle. By the time I was through with that truck both bumpers were damaged from hitting boulders, all the body panels were scratched/dented, the engine compartment was completely caked in mud, the front suspension was messed up, the dashboard wasn't working right cause I ripped some wires underneath, and I was on my 2nd set of tires after only 10K miles.

'91-'96 Honda after CRASH

Understeering has always been a big issue for the front wheel drive. While cruising at higher speeds, the steer will be unstable and twitchy. The turn could not be fully made and the car will swerve, slide, straight pointed to the heart of curve. One thing could be done is immediately release of gas. When the front wheel power weakens, restores the grap strength, the automobile can again back to the track. Slamming on the brake will just make it worst, because applying brake will shift the center of gravity of the car to the front again and speed up unexpectedly. This is resultant force from inertia & hortizonally shifted vertical loads (due to gravity) of the vehicle. Moreover, for a front wheel drive vehicle, when the dynamic output is up to certain level, torque-steering is likely to occur, Slamming on the gas will make the steer unstable and twitchy, too. The driver not only needs skills, but making a lot of coordination quickly. Best, do not speed with a front wheel drive!

Driver died in the accident. Passenger injured.

Thanks to the invention of the interlocking door anchoring system!
