AARRGG

I've only purchased one new car because of the lower cost of used (someone else take the hit, etc, etc...) I had so many problems with my 528 I decided to purchase a new car. Many of you have seen pics of my "new" X-Type. When I opened the hood to it last saturday I found a lot of corrosion from salt spray. I discussed it with the dealer and he said it didn't look like much. Well today I crawled underneath the car and this is what I found.

First under the hood:

Now under the car:

I hope the dealer does the right thing without a lot of hassle - I have already contacted my lawyer....

Beats me, the theory is transportation from the UK, but supposedly the car came from Wisconsin (salt they use on the roads?) so your guess is as good as mine.

Yeah, it's just downright odd, honestly. Based on the pictures, the car looks like it is years and years old, but it's brand spankin new!!

Can't the dealership just grind away the rust and/or replace whatever has been corroded by the salt??

Why did it come from Wisconsin? Via ship on the Great Lakes?

Wow - the used '94 I bought, a Pennsylvania car (salt) doesn't look anywhere near that bad! Some of that looks like my '87 Volvo did when I got rid of it. The ones that are ESPECIALLY concerning are the welded seams and electrical connectors. One or two of those mounting brackets is probably OK. Cast iron gets a surface rust but that's normal.

You should be pissed. Definitely push hard.

I picked the car up September 2nd, I found the corrosion the Saturday after I purchased the car. I am going to meet with the sales manager on tomorrow (Monday), so I will keep you informed.

This was the only manual 3.0l X-Type they could find. They trailered it to Oklahoma.

The worst thing about it was that the sales manager told me that the car was on the show room floor - the engine was covered in salt, so I just don't see how that's just not possible.

Some of that rust sure seems premature. I did have an 01 Dodge Ram with only 9 miles on it when delivered and I noticed substantial rust on the exhaust immediately so I’m not sure about that part because the rest was immaculate. My Expedition also has rust on the exhaust but nothing else like yours shows and it's almost 3 years old. Some of the rest seems like it may cause more problems.

Well when they spray salt all over the roads during the winters (worst thing to do EVER), cars really take a beating from that. That's the only good thing about auto washes....they really clean your underbody (where most of the salt sticks to your car) extremely well!

I have some rust on my BMW but it seems to be limited to the higher-strength cast parts which makes sense. I notice the same on the Expedition and it has been in a lot more salt that yours should have been. Just last December it got 1500 hard miles; even the windows were covered with salt.

I took some pictures but they did not come out very well so I will try again tomorrow. But other than the cast parts I see nothing despite all the abuse.

Something is just not right with your car.

EDIT: I was going to say ask Kirby but it looks like he was here. I guess the iron cast parts is what will rust. [:)]
