I am no professional on this but I think BMW does use a bit of a wierd size battery but you can always go for something that is not 100% the same size but still fits. If you get a truck/van battery, the car will start better and the battery will last longer. A friend of mine got one from sears for 86 dollars I think and he says it has a 6 year warranty if I am not mistaken. Since he doesn't run that car too much at all and when he does it is only for a really shot period of time, the battery died on him a couple of times and he got a new one for free all those times. I don't know if that one will fit in an e46 but I heard people reccomend optima batteries, just don't remember if it was the yellow or orange top.

Damn, so much for camshaft sensor. LOL.

Actually I just got my battery replaced on my E46 for the first time this summer. Going on 6 years old in November. Since it's in the trunk, it has to have a special vent deal unlike other batteries that just sit in the hood and is open to the air from underneith. I went with another BMW battery and my local independent guys installed it. Original BMW batters are really good. I read in Roundell that BMW was selling ones that didn't match the factory originals at one point, but that stopped and they are back to the good ones. Who knows. I considered going the Sears special (assuming they have the vent pack). But in the end I decided a battery that lasts 5 3/4 years is a good deal (I've heard of them going to 7 depending how you drive, weather conditions, etc.).

If it wasn't the battery I was thinking maybe the muffler bearings were shot....LOL.
Totally. Either that or the air intake mounting blades. They tend to need flushing around those miles. [hah]
