In flixvault.net forums I got asked the question of wether the NSX-R would beat the M3 CSL as I also heard there is a video about the two of them going at it. If someone could enlighten me on what would make the CSL beat the NSX and or other way around. Thanks

You want the April 2003 Best Motoring Video:

During Honda's test and tuning of the new car, the 2002 NSX-R lapped the Nurburgring's Nordschleife at 7:56", significantly faster than the SportAuto review. I believe Motoharu Kurosawa was the driver.

It's possible that the track was open to the public during SportAuto's test lap, which meant they had to dodge traffic. I'm not sure the magazine was able to get exclusive access during their testing which Honda/Best Motoring likely was able to.

Weak driver in the CSL, and considering how much less horsepower the CSL has im suprised it passed a 360 modena and kept up with that porshe, if the csl had more power, the only contenders would be the lambos =P, because you know the csl is quick in the corners. And even tho its slower, its still way prettier, and its still a BMW. =P not a crappy honda.

What a brilliant response, and so well put.

One could have just have easily have said:

Although Gan San was in the NSX, considering how much less horsepower the NSX-R has I am suprised it dominated the field until the end. If the NSX-R had more power, there would not have been any contenders, because you know the NSX-R is quick in the corners. And even though the NSX-R was underpowered, it remains one of the most beautiful cars on the road, with build quality and resale value that are anything but crappy.

i don't like the format of the best motoring races. for example in one, the driver missed a shift and lost a position....
also there were a few where it was just too trafficky (speel?) to pass...
they should run alone on the track, and then if they want to make it
look cool, superimpose the cars together...they only do this format
b/c the japanese fans like the "dueling" heheh

cool video nonetheless

Well actually scandalous the NSX-R is a very expensive piece of kit at around 70,000 pounds. That would equate to around 300K in the US money. The other thing i find is that bestmotoring aint the most imparital testers going around. They really do love to promote their Japanese cars. Having said that... i reckon an NSX-R would give the M3 CSL very stiff competition. They seem quite close in outright performance though.

WOw, the exchange rate has changed. Are you using Australian pounds? No idea about that rate, but for the british pound, it's normally about 1 British pound for 1.5 US dollars.

While not for US sale, the cost of the NSX-R in USD would be approx. $110k.

As biased as I may be, I have to admit Honda makes the NSX-R, which is a fine car. But I also have to say that the above race seems more biased toward the NSX-R than I am toward BMW. Obviously the driver of the NSX-R is the best driver of the group, plus he also has the only right drive car. IMO this gives him twice the advantage over the others that are not quite as good and would almost certainly perform better in a right drive vehicle (considering Japan is right drive). Which would further explain the missed shifts. IMO measures of an unbiased observation include consistency in the examination.

I trust you show the same skepticism to pro-BMW evaluation?

I don't claim the video is the most perfect comparison. It is a piece of the puzzle, nothing more, nothing less.

While Gan San is the best driver, the rest are not as poor or as unfamiliar with LHD cars as you think, AFAIK.

The fact remains the NSX had approx. 50-300 less hp. than the cars it was competing with.

I do not expect everyone will love the NSX, but it deserves respect.

I dunno about you guys but I think the M3 CSL kicks ass except that BMW acted like a group of "girly-men" ([fake]) when they decided to equip it with the SMG transmission. The car is supposed to be a very special BMW that only true drivers can appreciate....why the hell would you give it SMG so that just "anyone" can drive it??

I think the Honda NSX-R (and the NSX itself) is a terribly underrated car and that if it wore a true luxury brand badge (even Acura isn't good enough for most MB/BMW snobs) it would be much more widely accepted for what it is truly capable of.

IMHO, The only fair way to compare two cars track times is:
1. Two Drivers
2. Closed Track
3. Both drivers drive both cars
4. Multi-lap runs
5. Average the lap times of both drivers for a given car

Anything less leaves a lot of opportunity for intentional or unintentional errors. It could be done with one driver, but two drivers will have different skills and work the cars differently.

I agree that the NSX is a highly respectible car. The NSX is not a Honda Civic with a wing and a fart can muffler, and shouldn't be compared to them.
