my dad wants a track day car for those scca meetings and i was wondering what would be the best type of car to buy for cheap and i was thinking maybe buying a 2002 and swaping the engine and fixing it up and what not. so any ideas anyone or suggestions all inquiries all welcome. thanks.

If you are going to dedicate the car to track use, a 2002 or a e30 would be ideal. The E30 would be better, as there is a huge selection of reasonably priced performance parts available, and the E30 chassis is stiffer than an E36. There are not nearly as many parts available for the 2002.

how much you think it would cost for a crappy e30 but is in good condition minus the engine and seats(like the paint has to be good), plus an M engine and some seats, harnesses, rollcage, and suspension and brake upgrades?

E30 in good condition $2000 (try to find an older ETA, they are lighter for some reason)

M engine - assuming you mean s50/s52, probably around $4k for the whole package. 6k for the whole swap doing it yourself.

seats? unsure which seats you would look for... between $200 and $800

The rest of the stuff you can check out on numerous sites, like vac motorsport, turner, bimmeworld, etc.

so i think we have a game plan if my dad pulls thru. i just found a nice e30 325is 1987 250,000 miles we're going to rebuild the engine bottom up aplly direct injection full exhaust, intake sparco seats and harnesses roll cage, and big brembo brakes. maybe just maybe bbs wheels instead of the basket weaves. and gutt almost the entire car. i figure about 150 more hps with all the new parts and minus 250-300 pounds. so yeah say good bye E46 M3's ;)

Well 250k miles is quite a bit for any chassis, even an e30. I guess if you are putting a roll cage in it and stuff it should be fine.

And, to be faster than an e46 M3 You'll need an S52 with OBDI swap.

Before you get too carried away on mods, you mentioned this was to be a track car. Is it just for Fun Track Days/Driver Events and such, or do you plan to really compete in SCCA, BMWCCA or other sanctioned racing?

If you are looking to do sanctioned racing, you can't just go willy nilly mod'ing the car, or you will find yourself unclassed, or in an open/misc class. And you WILL NOT be competitive with a mod'ed E30 in an open/misc class, you'll get your ass handed to you.

Other $$$$ assuming you are going track racing (not just AutoX or non-competition track days):
Rollcage - $750 - $1000 (Cutting costs on a cheap rollcage = your life
)
Suspension - $1000 - $2000
Brake upgrade - $800
Tires - $500
Driver's gear (nomex, helmet, 5 pt harness, fire ext, etc.) - $600 - $800

we're probably going to just use it for scca meetings and just trying to get quick times on the course, not really competition use. i found a 6-point rollcage bolt in for $630 and i dont need drivers gear.
wait wait its not what you think i have the gear already, me and my dad gokart and before you start judging let you know that i am 17 i have a 2004 italkart 125cc non-shifter kart i can beat many 125cc shifter karts just not the really really good drivers or crgs they ROCK!
anyways im begging you guys please answer me i can't find it anywhere and its bugging the heck outta me, WHERE CAN I FIND DIRECT INJECTION?
also we might end up rebuilding the engine ourselves good idea or no(car has 250,000 miles)so us rebuild it or pros? thanks

Well, if you want direct injection on a bmw motor you better find a wrecked e90 335i turbo. Otherwise get your drill out and start hacking away at the head. Good luck.

You sound very immature, I think you need to sit back and read your posts and the replies to your original post. How could we possibly tell you if you and your dad could handle rebuilding any motor, let alone deal with the tolerances of a BMW motor???? [screwy]

Man, you are going to tear apart a 325is? Tell ya what - I'll trade you my manual 325 eta coupe (lighter, remember?) for that 325is straight up. You don't need to start with and "destroy" something relatively rare like a 325is to build a car like this.

Direct injection?? On an M20? Just like Eric said, get out your drill, because you'll be fabbing it yourself, and I can almost guarantee that it won't work as well as the stock port fuel injection.

Bolt in roll cage? Better think again. If you are going to spend money on a roll cage, then make sure it is something that is actually going to add structural integrity to the vehicle. Anything that bolts together and bolts to the car ain't gonna cut it. Roll cages need to be welded or else don't waste the money. Roll cages shouldn't be installed for the looks - they actually should be able to serve a purpose. Just as Kirby said, if you will need a roll cage, don't skimp on it.

300hp out of an M20? Ha! You be dreamin, my boy. You be dreamin.

Put a V12 in it. Don't laugh, I met a guy here in town that is actually doing this. He pulled a V12 from a 7er and is putting it in a E30. He owns a metal fab/weld shop business so he can pull it off. I have his phone number, I'm going to go look at it later this summer (Aug/Sept) when he gets further along. Eric, wanna come to Reading and take a look?
