They do not suck at what they are designed to do, they do it pretty well and are cheap to modify. The new Stang looks pretty good. Would not mind having one if the price is right to replace my convert. Also, just because it is American does not mean a Stang or F-Body can not keep up around the curves with a BMW. Yes, the BMW handles OK, but a stock 3 series, just because it is German is no 911[;)]

Oh just for reference sake a Type R integra will hit about .92 to .94 on a skid pad on 15" stock tires and sells for about 23K they can also run 13's with bolt ons.

The 40K+ luxury cars are designed for different buyers. Most luxury car owners will never change cams, swap in a bigger blower/turbo or even change the suspension. So they cost quite a bit because they come relitively balanced from the factory for ho-hum acceleration numbers and decent handling.

The stang is ancient....the primary buyer doesnt care about sipping a latte at a traffic light, chatting to his broker on his way home or pulling up to the valet section at the local country club.

The avg SVT Cobra owner is 45 and grew up with the stigma of big cars and even bigger motors.....handling was and will usaually be an after thought with domestic OEM's.

However....the GT40, Z06 and Viper have been refined (still raw and powerful) but compared to their 60's era roots they are for drivers more concerned with pure raw muscle fun than luxury.

The germans are a little more focused on solid chassis that hold up to harsh euro roads and overall driving experience. Mercedes....heavy, solid....LOTS of Torque....not very fast but the general experience is point and shoot.

BMW's are a little lighter but still cater to luxury refinements quiet cabins, quiet motors plush interiors....high quality stuff.

So comparing a Mustang to a BMW is apples to oranges in many respects but if FR to FR is the test.....a solid rear axle vs. independant/multi link suspension most would give the nod to the IRS in a handling match....but thats an engineering point not a rubber hits the road outcome.

BMW's come with a balanced chassis, Mustangs comewith a big motor and a solid means of putting down the huge torque to the ground.

Power can be made, grip can be had.....in the end all that matters is which one is better balanced...A stock M Coupe vs. stock Cobra stang....M coupe should walk away overall BUT modded....the M would lose really bad in the power/acceleration department....and the rear suspension on the stang can always be converted to IRS....and there is always the 5.0L V8 BMW motor....[hihi]

A stock Type R will run high 14s for its quarter mile time. The K20A2 RSX-S will run high 13s with a hondata ecu, which would run about 800 bucks, and bolt-ons. The reason being is that the K20A2 is very bottled up in its stock from and has a lot of potential for making more power. However, there's not way an ITR can run 13's with just bolt-ons. The realistic g force on the skidpad for a stock R will actually be from .90-.92 g.
