New Zealand

KK = the town of Kerikeri (Population 6000) in the beautiful, sunny, sub-tropical Bay of Islands or BOI.

below is a pic of urapukapuka Island - one of the largest of 105 islands in the bay of Islands

well in SoCal, especially south orange county, they are every 3rd - 5th car you see, they are really popular here, and we have hte largest BMW center in the country, i think! they just finished an expansion so they ahve like 80-100 bays, 400 3 Series on the lot...and they are blowing up the service zone to enlarge it and make a covered area for turning in your car that will be able to fit like 100 cars! another example, yesterday i took my car for service and was talkign to my service guy who said "today we had 133 cars turned in for repairs......thats a usual amount, but thats why we expanded the (place where we fix cars, my brain is dead right now)"...supposedely they can now do about 200 cars a day

Yeah, lots of E30's and E34's and E36's. Not too many new ones - the new luxury cars are all mercedes, Jags, Porsches, the odd bentley etc. One of the locals owns and old 1920's Rolls Royce. Rolls ofered him 5 million NZ for it to put in their museum - he turned it down.

In Auckland (NZ's biggest City Pop. 1 million, and only city by world standards, Previous home of the Americas Cup, and about 3 or so hours drive from the Bay of Islands) it seems as if every second car is a bimmer - m3 CSL's, e30's galore from stock 318's right up to re-engined and turboed m325i's, even seen one with a 12a rotary - these cars are really popular in the boy racer scene, and also plenty of huge 7-series uber-saloons etc, but then Auckland has a love-affair with the car - porsches, ferraris, astons, maserati's, lambos can be seen on a daily basis in the right suburbs (although not the majority of cars by any stretch of the imagination).

As it is the holiday season, I have seen an influx of nice bimmers up here lately driven by tourists, I saw a B10 Alpina, and a S14 Schnitzer in one 5 minute block.

Not many, but they are around. Problem is, most of them cannot be imported anymore due to new frontal impact laws applicable to new imports, so, those cars that are here are slowly INCREASING in value. For instance, you cannot import any E30, so if you own an E30 M3, it is quite a good investment.

The only way to import as far as I know is to import in parts and buy a wreck that has been registered before, and do some dodgy welding of VIN plates etc. I'll do some research now you've got me thinking.

Not a prob for '80s bimmers as they are growing on trees over here - part of the reason why I would like to get a couple of them and keep them in mint condition so when all the others start to rust away, I have a rare car.

Yep, had a look - If the vehicle is over 20 years old, no problem. If not then it must comply with frontal impact standards - the E30 does not, and not all E36 or E46's do either. So I guess pre-85 E30's are OK.

is a link to the appropriate govt website for NZ vehicle importing rules. Here

it looks like its the airbags that r the problem which of course is a bit difficult on an e30, by the way the girlfriend was that impressed with your scenery that shes looking into that area for our honeymoon

You'll both love it - just come in january (like now) as it is the best month for weather. december is often fickle, and end of Feb, March we get the odd cyclone (love sub-tropical climates!) and obvioulsy your summer is our winter, so avoid it then.

If looking, place names in the bay are: Russell, Paihia, Kerikeri, Waitangi, Haruru Falls. Any questions on where to stay, what to do, and how much to pay feel free to ask.
