Have any of you ever driven a Toyota MR 2 Spyder or Honda S2000?

These cars are cheap! I found a MR 2 on swaplease.com for $333.00/month with about 1,350 miles/month. Damn, hard to beat for a fun, cheap car to have around. It seems like they show up in the $300’s per month often with some good mileage limits.

Are they garbage? Sure they are not a BMW but the price seems fantastic for a convertible if they are decent at all.

MR2 Spyder is a piece of shit.

I've driven a Honda S2000 once before (test-drive), I wish I was better at stick when I test-drove it. It is a really great roadster, great handling, great acceleration (engine is amazing), and great brakes. Just keep in mind that the engine does lack torque and there is like nothing on the inside (barely any features, stereo system is crappy, etc.). It is a very pure and very raw sports car, it doesn't even have traction control. I really want an S2000 for the summer.

I am not thinking about buying anything for a while but I get an email from swaplease.com every now and then and these caught my attention. Definitely something I never though about in the past but the S2000 looks like a good possibility.

S2000 is a great car as long as it is not your primary ride. Also, I'm 6'1'' and couldn't get the seat back far enough. My knees were hitting the underside of the dashboard. If you're less than 6'0", this car should fit you just fine. Car has plenty or power, a real nice exhaust note, and killer looks. I would have bought it as a weekend car if only I could have gotten that seat back another few inches.

That's true, but the engine is fabulous from 4K - 9K rpm.

frolf, the MR2 Spyder has a good base, but it's overall a piece of shit. The engine is a piece of shit, the car looks like a piece of shit, and the overall drive is like a piece of shit. Anybody who owns an MR2 Spyder is a true idiot who should have gotten a Miata instead.

I test drove the S2000 and was not impressed. It did handle well, but it felt slooooww. I know it's not, but man, the lack of torque is very evident. I think it's a nice car and Honda makes a great car.

the new 2004 one is a little better in the torque dept. Both HP and Torque peaks come quite a bit lower now. Still high compared to a BMW, but better than before. Plus, they increased shoulder room a tad somehow.

I wish I had one. I considered it for a lil bit cuz I love the looks inside and out and I sorta wanted a convertible, but couldn't get it cuz it woulda been my only vehicle.

Yeah, but codex, you know they lowered the rev limiter to only 8,000rpm now! [mad] What made the S2000 so special was the 9K rpm redline but it was just way too raw for most people, so Honda toned the engine down a bit and gave it more power down low, but the engine isn't as raw as it used to be (but it's still pretty freaking raw).

My youngest brother has a MR2 Spyder, great car !!, excellent gear-box, spirited pep, but not fast, great cornering, a bit light for a regular freeway car imo.

Summary - great for a fun car around town, reliable too.

My problem with the MR2 Spyder is that it's so damn ugly! Granted the styling is definitely unique, the vehicle as a whole just looks awkward. And the thing only costs like $5 so how much sports car could you possibly get for the money?

Edit: Wow, $25K base MSRP, I thought it was cheaper than that for some reason. Either way, for that price I'd rather get a Mazdaspeed Miata (turbocharged). But then again, if I could spend $25K on a car, I'd push it up to $32K and get myself an S2000. [thumb]

Of the 3 I too would pick the S2000, hands down...
I defnately would take the MR2 Spyder over the Miata - in fact my brother had a Miata before the MR2. The Toyota really is an excellent value, providing you like the looks.

Yeah, I am just biased because my friend has a 2001 model Miata whereas I haven't even been within 10 feet of an MR2 Spyder. My main problem with these two cars is their lack of an aggressive appearance (which makes particularly the Miata, a somewhat girly car) and the lack of a real engine, although the new Mazdaspeed Miata has pretty much resolved those issues.
