It's a Supra. I can't remember what year, but the first car my Mom bought was a brand new Celica GT - the last year before the introduction of the Supra. They put alot of the Supra stuff on the Celica GTs the year before to try to spur interest in the upcoming Supra.

She loved that car - she bought it off of the showroom floor and didn't have a clue how to drive a stick.

You're right about the what the car is, but regarding trying to spur interest, I'm not to sure. The Supra was initially introduced as a package feature of the Celica line, hence it was called the Toyota Celica Supra; similar to how the M3 is a performance version of the 3 Series. The only difference between the Celica Supra and all other celica liftback models was a jump from a 4 cyl 22R engine to the L6 4M-E engine, 4-wheel disc brakes, different trim package (B pillars, grill and rear lights) and an extended wheel base. None of these options were ever on any other celica of this generation except the Celica SUpra.

BTW, my Dad had the similar experience; he saw a Celica Supra in a parking lot one day and the next day went to the dealer and bought his first car; a Celica Supra.

Looks like a 1980-82 Celica GT.

ACK! No. Not quite. The celica GT was a coupe, not a liftback / hatchback. The only celica models (after 1978) that had a 3-door design where the Supra and the Celica Liftback....I dunno what I expected...this is a BMW board. lol. But I thought some of you older...err...more experienced members would surely know this car.

Well, when my mom bought her Celica GT, they didn't have the Celica Supra yet. The Supra was coming out the following year. From what my parents have told me, her Celica GT was some limited edition model that included some performance pieces/trim/etc that you couldn't get on any other Celica and were a part of the following model year's Supra package. I know that the color combination she had was only available on the limited edition model she had.

I don't know - I'm not a Toyota guy - just going on what my parents have told me about the car. I've only seen pictures of it.

See, my Mom's Celica was most definitely a GT and also most definitely a liftback. If I remember correctly, I think that may have been part of the package she had - something like you could get the upcoming Supra liftback on a limited special version of the previous year's GT.

Those are really, really rare from that generation celica...the celica liftback GTs were only produced in 1978 and only for half a year. 1978 was the first year of this body style for the celica. 1979 is when the Celica Supra was introduced.

So it looked like this:

Fair guess then. Sorry if I seemed zealous...I love this generation Supra probably as much as you love your Camaro.

Sean,

Yep, that's the car. I knew it was rare. Most definitely a liftback GT. Hers was black with some other contrasting color trim (maybe gold??? - I can't really remember) - apparently a color combination that was only available on that limited production car. There was something about the interior that was also only available in that limited production car, but I can't remember what it was. My dad even installed rear glass louvers on her car that looked just like those in that picture. It's definitely a sharp car, and you don't see hardly any Celica GT's around anymore. The only ones I ever see are falling apart and look like crap.

Anywho, my parents got rid of it shortly after I was born. My mom wrecked it once and got it fixed, and then it got wrecked again when my mom rear-ended a lady who came to a complete stop at a green light. [?|] The Toyota dealer advised her after the second accident to try to sell it because they said after the second frontal accident, the frame was tweaked badly and the car would never drive right. It was fixed again and my mom sold it, especially since getting me in and out of a car seat in that car was a pain. She still has a soft spot for that car. I don't think she'll ever love a car like she loved that one.

My dad said that that car was really peppy and had no problem getting up and going. Really sporty. The thing my dad remembers most about it is how many vacuum lines there were in the engine compartment. He had only ever had American muscle cars up to that point, and when my mom bought this Celica, that was a completely different type of car from what he was used to.

You would not believe how many vacuum hoses are on those old 22R/20R and 4M-E motors. The engine in the Celica Liftback GTs were L4s with quite a punch, and the Supra was introduced with an L6 that put out and impressive 116hp at the time; I am actually rebuilding a 4M-E motor currently, and I've had to special order some of those hoses from hose shops around PA. If your dad ever worked on the Celica's engine, ask him about banjo pipes; I believe old japanese engines were the only ones who used such...technology. lol.

It is a 1979 Toyota Celica Supra. Year of introduction for the Supra.

Funny fact: Toyota denies that the Supra existed from 1979 to 1981. The 15th year anniversary Supra was model year 1997. Toyota pretty much refuses to accept the 79-81 Supra as a Supra, even though the 1982 Supra had the same engine as the years previous.

Wow, 29! I figured you were at least 40. (Read as a compliment).

lol ok, I'll trust you and take it as a compliment.

I wonder why Toyota would deny the 79-81 Supra. Is it because the Supra originally started as a sportier version of the Celica?

I think all Celicas were liftbacks around this time-I don't think they made anything else. [scratch]

These cars were semi hot for the time, I think. I could not drive back then but I still remember them.

EDIT: I did find a picture of a coupe, I can see why there were not many around.

My original thought, however, the 82-85 Generation of the Supra was still called Celica Supra. It wasn't till mid-production year that they made Supra its own. They did the samething with the Solara; introduced it as a Camry Solara, then two/three years later re-introduced it as just a Solara.

I have researched "the why" to the question, but I've never found a reason.

There were several models:

Celica Liftback GT (1978) ---Hatchback
Celica Liftback (1978-1981) ---Hatchback
Celica Supra (1979-1981) ---Hatchback
Celica ST (1978-1981) ---Coupe
Celica GT (1978-1981) ---Coupe
Celica (1978-1981)---Coupe
Celica Sunchaser (1980-1981) ---Convertible done by "Griffith"

The one that sold the most was the Celica Liftback 1978-1981; this car was actually named the car of the 80s by some magazine...poor choice in my opinion.
The Celica Supra and Celica Sunchaser sold the least because of its price.

My first car was a 74 Celica ST 3-speed automatic (bought used in 1978). I don't remember the engine size. I broke the timing chain on it and bent some valves after abusing the hell out of it.

I also owned an 84 Supra (bought used in 86). It was not called a Celica Supra. It had a 5-speed manual, an awesome digital dashboard, a trip computer, pop-up headlights and a 3.0 litre DOHC V-6.
