Got Into a an Accident Today...

Hey,

So I was driving home from school today, totally psyched for the week-end (no Friday classes). I took the route I always use to get home. At one part, I have to make a left turn and there is on-coming traffic and the road is a 40 zone where everybody mostly goes 50. I was approaching the light where I had to make a left turn, behind three other cars. The three cars made their left turn very casually and shit, so for some stupid messed up reason, I guess I just assumed that it was clear. Now when it was my turn to make the left turn, I made a full stop to check and make sure that the on-coming traffic that was making a right turn (onto the same road I wanted to turn onto), was ready to yield for me. They yielded and I stupidly started making the turn, forgetting to check the on-coming traffic that is going straight! I don't know why the f*ck I did this or what the f*ck I was thinking....I make this turn literally several times a day, it's a turn I need to make to get back home and it's about 5 minutes from my house.
Anyways, I made the left turn and at the last second I look to my right and I see this purple car only a few feet away from me....I knew it was gonna hit me so I kinda braced myself. The car barrelled into me travelling at a good 40-50mph (I got a really good look at the last second before it hit me, and I'm real good at estimating speeds). It was an old lady driving so she didn't even react...her car literally smashed into mine at 45mph. My side-curtain airbag and my side door impact airbag both deployed and it was a pretty loud bang. My car stalled from the impact, naturally.
I started the car back up and drove over to this small parking lot on the side made up of gravel. The old lady pulled her car over to the side of the road and I went to check to see if she was okay, and she was. Her passenger-side airbag deployed though (the car was a late 90's Ford Escort or Contour, not really sure). I called 911 and the cops came and we told the story and obviously it was my fault. I called a tow truck for myself, but they said they'd be there in an hour so I said screw it....my car was still somewhat drivable and I was only like 5 minutes from home. So I just drove it home real slow. I filed a claim with insurance, I found a local body shop who can fix my car (my local Infiniti dealership does not do bodywork) and they are going to tow it tomorrow morning. The guy at the body shop is going to get a claim adjuster to look at the car ASAP because I explained how I want them to start the work ASAP (some of these insurance companies are bastards and they can take up to several weeks just before they get the claim adjuster to look at the car!).
Anyways, the old lady was okay...she just had knee surgery so she didn't want to get out of the car and an ambulance came to take her. The cops told me she was fine but they took her to the hospital just to make sure everything was okay. I'll try to take some pictures of my car and post them up before the body shop hauls my baby away.
I just hope everything works out okay....naturally my dad is pissed. I'm just super pissed off at myself for making such a stupid mistake. [?|]
And I know it was totally my fault, but if the lady had actually used her brakes, this would have been avoided....like I said, I never saw how close or far the car was, but I had already completed the turn and then she smashed me...basically, I think if she had actually at least TRIED to use her brakes, the whole thing might have been avoided or at least the results would have been a lot better/safer but then again I shouldn't have f*cked up in the first place.

Yeah, I just wanted to vent.

Thanks,
MrElussive

Well, at least both you and the lady are fine. Machines can be replaced, lives cant. And at least you wrecked a crappy car (not your G35, but her Ford)....If it was a bimmer or something, then you should be kicking yourself, but its just a Ford [;)]. Sorry.... anyways, be thankful you're OK, everyone makes mistakes sometimes, everything will be fine again before you know it.

Sorry to hear about this, Emile. I'm glad to hear you are both OK.

So, I'm curious - what effect does having an accident like this have on your lease? Does it have an effect when you turn the car back in?

Thanks for the support, guys. The car just has to be repaired to 100% original condition. The car will certainly take a hit on its value because of this accident, but nothing comes out of my pocket (other than raised insurance rates). It's a benefit of leasing....I never ever wanted it to come to this and I wanted to return the car accident-free (except for that spin out I had a while ago), but I guess I wasn't able to accomplish that. [:(]

Here are the pictures, I think the car did extremely well considering it was rammed on its side at 40-50mph (no exaggeration or anything...this lady was FLYING and made no attempt to slow down at all).

OUCH!!! Those pictures hurt me just looking at them. I am so sorry man!!!! Like Kevrc4130 said...the cars can be repaired much easier... and a hell of a lot cheaper than humans. I am just really glad you are ok!!! Try to just put it out of your mind, and not stare at it all weekend..if that's possible. [:(]

Wow, I'm really glad to hear that everyone is ok. I had an accident like that a while ago because I fell asleep at the wheel. I woke up just before impact, and I still remember that terrible feeling in the instant before the crash. Don't be surprised if you feel a little anxious or paranoid when you first get behind the wheel again. It took me about a week to get over the feeling that everyone was going to hit me. Hang in there and I hope you get your car back soon. Fortunately, it's just a rental! (j/k w/you, I lease too).

ahhhhh I am so sorry, but like everyone else, just glad the both of you are okay.......maybe with the lady just having knee surgery she is on medication and couldnt react fast enough with her braking system or her mind was on other things too.......it happens......I catch myself not paying attention at times and by the grace of God nothing happened......good luck, it'll get better........

That sucks man. If it makes you feel any better (which I'm sure it will) I smashed up my grandfathers pickup truck by plowing into a parked car. Shit happens. I also banged up my bimmer a little bit by hitting a friend of mine in a parking lot. Theres nothing you can do really except get the metal replaced and move on. There is nothing that feels so bad as when you just get into an accident, especially when you know it's your fault. Oh well, you'll be fine. Good luck with everything!

Thanks for the support everyone, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, I think this is going to cost a shitload to repair because there is a lot of damage and even more than to what meets the eye. For example, in the interior shots, you can see my glove box is open and that is not by choice. The door is slightly smushed inwards and I think it squeezes the dash a little bit or something like that, but basically the glove box doesn't close anymore.
I hope the frame/chassis is still alright...I think the car is far from being "totaled" but there is significant damage to it. Replacement parts for this car are extremely expensive so I'm assuming the repairs will be in the $10K range.
I think the accident occured because of the way I focus on traffic when making that left turn. See, I am a super defensive driver and the on-coming traffic that makes a right turn, they're supposed to yield to the people who are making a left onto that road (me in this case), but a lot of times they don't. So being a defensive driver, I put a lot of my attention towards those cars who are supposed to yield and I neglect the immediate on-coming traffic. Needless to say, I don't think I will ever mess that intersection again.
My goal now is to just "take care of business" and get my car back on the road ASAP!

Man, that looks like some pretty significant damage. Plus, with the airbag deployment, it looks like you'll be needing a new headliner and probably a new passenger seat!!! ($$$, especially for that passenger seat).

I know exactly how you feel right now. I can absolutely sympathize with you. I crunched my Camaro into a tree one night when I was in undergrad - I ended up having to replace all of the sheetmetal in front of the windshield as well as all of the underlying structural pieces you can't see on the surface(except driver's fender). It took me several weeks to get it all apart and back together with the new parts. I still remember that feeling after it happened and when I'd look at the wrecked car - kind of a pit of your stomach sick nausea. I'm sure you feel that way right now. All I could do for weeks was replay the whole incident in my head and think about what I could have done to avoid it. It sucks. Some aspects of my car haven't been right since the accident (namely the paint which is now beginning to fall apart [:(!] ), and I still get upset when I think about it.

Again, I'm very sorry to hear/see what happened. I guess all you can do at this point is chalk it up to a "learning moment."

I remember a few months ago a spun out real bad at auto X and i start going backwards then all of the sudden i was in some farmers hay field lol. I had gone through a barbed wire fence and barly missed a tree, so I had to go to the walmart near by and buy bolt cutter to cut the lock on the fence so i could get my poor e30 out, i could go back the way i came. the only dammage i had was a ****ed rear valace thing and a few scratches all over. and this was on a fun run. when i was getting my car out some one there said "That fence can keep a cow out but it can keep and e30"

hope you get back on the road ASAP. and glad to hear that only the cars got hurt.

i hate that feeling you get after an accident, esp knowing it was your fault. i actually backed my store van into some girl's jeep liberty while backing into a spot at the parking lot of my store this past summer. luckily for me the damage to my tin can of a van doesn't matter but i wrecked the side of her new truck.. i felt really really bad.. well sometimes things like that happen.. all you can do is learn from it and move on....

hope you dun miss yer baby too much

Holy shit brother....I am glad you are ok.....did you go to the hospital to get checked yourself???? You probably should. Adrenalin can mask pain for days. Impact at that speed normally messes people up pretty bad. I am damn happy that you are ok. You want to hear something VERY weird????? Yesterday I was looking at wrecked exotics.com and I came across a wrecked G35, black and everything. I saved the pic and was going to post it today and make a joke to you about it..........then this shit happens. WOW that is weired.
