At a recent Press Conference in Hamburg, Airbus (Germany is a part of the consortium) exhibited the new A380 double decker. Not to be outdone, a dignitary arrived in an M5 and ran some laps around the Airbus.

That's a great picture... I'm saving it, the M5 and the jumbo airbus are perhaps the two greatest inventions out of Germany as of late.

Actually his statement "out of Germany" is completely accurate. Although Airbus is now incorporated under French law and calls it headquarters France, it still is not a French owned or directed company. Germany was one of the original founders of Airbus. The Airbus 380 was assembled and tested in Germany, and the parent company of Airbus, EADS, is (as I mentioned in the first post) a consortium of four European countries.

"Airbus, since 2001 a fully integrated single company, started life as a French-German consortium in 1970. Later it was joined by CASA of Spain and British Aerospace. Success grew with the widebody A300/A310 Family, the medium-range single aisle A320 Family and the long-range widebody A330/A340 Family."

"The four national entities which had previously formed the Airbus consortium transferred their Airbus-related assets to the new company and became shareholders in Airbus -- Airbus France, Airbus Deutschland and Airbus Espana merging as the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) with 80% shares and BAE SYSTEMS with 20%."

The 380 is set to be the 747-400's replacement... [hihi] Boeing all the way... while it still can.
It's not so much a replacement as it is a competitor. Besides, Boeing is relasing a new plane (the 787 I think) to compete against the Airbus. Boeing rejects the notion of a massive increase in size, preferring to concentrate instead on smaller, more efficient designs.

This is just the beginning of the 'war of the skies' IMO.

Boeing was going to build a larger improved 747, but confidence dwindled and they lost funding or whatnot and ditched the program. So the A380 stands without a competitor and Boeing does not really care, I believe they have other focuses...

There is no war of the skies... The 380 is going to be King for quite some time, they've said this years ago btw.

When i make reference to the 'war of the skies' I mean the legal wrangle that has enveloped the two companies regarding Airbus' perceived unfair advantage through state-sponsored funding.

I must say though, that I find it hard to believe Boeing 'doesn't care' about the threat from the A380... After all, Airbus is taking orders like there is no tomorrow. What are Boeing's 'other focusses'? Small planes? Airbus makes them too. I reckon Boeing might be in a spot of bother at the moment.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is nothing to sneeze at. They have already received orders for 266 of these planes. The 787 family of aircraft, in the 200 to 300 seat class, will carry passengers non-stop on routes between 6,500km and 16,000km at speeds up to Mach 0.85. The Dreamliner aircraft is being designed in three versions, the baseline version, a short-range and a stretched version.

The baseline version, the 787-8, has a maximum take-off weight of 205,400kg. The aircraft typically accommodates 220 passengers in a three-class cabin configuration. The length is 56m. The wingspan is 58.8m and the height is 17.4m. The range is 15,700km (8,500nm).

The 787-3 short-range version is the same length and height as the 787 but has a shorter wingspan (51.5m). The maximum take-off weight is 136,075kg and the range is reduced to 6,500km. The aircraft will carry 296 passengers in two classes. The stretched version, 787-9, has the same wingspan and height as the standard 787 but the length is increased by 6m to 62m. The aircraft carries typically 259 passengers in a three-class cabin layout. The range is increased to 15,370km and the maximum take-off weight is 223,000kg.

And Boeing is expected to announce the scheduled beginning of the new 747 tonight as they have firm orders for the plane. Don't count Boeing out of the mix!
