i never wait by the tank, unless i'm filling up like $5 or something. and *knock on wood* never did i end up w/ gas spillage due to to faulty nozzle.

full service state.. that's gotta be nice. Korea is all about full service too. (nice gesture considering their gas prices..) i'm not a fan becuase i'm pretty anal about even a bit of gas dripping from the nozzle to the paint in the fuel well. i always pull out a paper towel to catch the drip, so it won't smear the paint. suppose i can't ask the attendant to do that for me too huh?
Reminds me when the greedy attendant tried to put another $1.50 of gas into my 325i and when he removed the nozzle it seemed as if about half a gallon dripped right down the side of my car...

We here in Aussie land must pump our own gas... everywhere... it's very upsetting. I thought being served by an attendant went out in the '50's. I also haven't come across any petrol bowsers that allow you to just leave it in the car pumping away by itself, maybe I just haven't looked properly. Wow, you people in the US have service and a half! We just have service.

A lot of people think it's a saftey thing, but I think some of the states over here still have full service stations becuase it creates a few - though low paying - jobs.

On that note my friend from school didn't know how to pump gas because his mom would do it so one day at school I showed up in the morning because he couldn't pick me up and when I got there everyone told me about how he pumped diesel into his Geo....poor kid. I think filling up the tank and checking ur oil and coolant should be part of getting ur license.

What? And ruin the leather?

It really should be a part of licensing, that way, everyone knows how to pump their own gas! Which you would think is to be expected... come on, it's pumping gas. Changing the oil I can understand that people would not know how... but GAS!! Well... nothing else to say; pumping gas!!?? Okay, that's all for real.

I live in northern CA and am used to pumping my own gas. When I drive up to Oregon where you're not allowed to pump your own gas at all (must be some kind of organic granola thing) I get out of the car and go for the pump out of habit. It's hilarious watching the attendant run over to grab the pump out of my hand.

Why do some states not allow self service?

In all honesty, I don't think I've pumped my own gas more than five times in my entire life but that's because we live in NJ where full service is required. Aren't there instructions on how to pump your own gas at every pump anyways? I just learned by watching what my dad did when we used to go skiing in Vermont, it's far from rocket science.
This is the same for Oregon. You cannot pump your own gas in that state either. I cannot tell you how many Oregonians I have helped pump their gas, because they really don't know how too. They are always very embarrased to ask, but I always help with a smile on my face......
