I had Dunlop D40 M2s on the 325i before the Yokos. I think they are now called the SP Sport 8000? I don't know for sure.

I liked the D40 M2s. They were more expensive and had better dry traction than the Yoko ES 100s. They didn't wear as well and were not quite as good in the wet, but still a good tire.

In fact, I still have them and should probably get rid of them if anybody is interested. (225/50/16, a fair amount of tread on them, one of the tires has been plugged on the outside and inside to fix the same nail hole, which is why I replaced the set a little earlier than I had planned (say 5k miles or so) $50 + shipping for the set of 4?)

ok, now i'm thinking about a mid-price summer tire. maybe Toyo Proxies, Yokohamas, or something else.

no more Michelin, or Bridgestone i don't think. i got hooked up with some R compounds for super cheap, so those will be my track tirse.

any new thoughts comrads?

Exactly. If you have track tires, you don't need to spend the cash. You may want to get some extra rims, if you don't have them, so you don't have to unmount and remount the tires.

As indicated above, I think the ES 100s are the best value in a summer performance tire.

The Toyos are better performance tires, but I don't think you need that for street driving. The Yokos limits are still beyond what you can sensibly do on the street. You have R compounds for the track. I also feel the Yokos are a better all around tire, in terms of dry handling and tire wear. The silica compound in the ES 100s seems very robust.

What is the price difference you are looking at in your size from tire rack or other?

I would expect the Yokos to be around $100-150 cheaper per set of 4.

i read some reviews, and i think i'm going to go with the Toyo's. I haven't got an exact price onthem yet, they are calling me tomorrow (the tire shop i am ordering from) and if its in the $150-$160 range i'll do the Toyo's, if not its the Yokos. I'll keep you all posted.

I would think you could get the Toyos for that range, if not less. I paid around $180 a piece for the 265/40/17s on the back of the NSX 9 mos. ago. What size are you getting?

Pirelli's are the BOMB so far.. 3 months with them, and 3k miles later, and I *still* have some of the rubber nips on the wheels, and that is with some occassional spirited driving, believe me..

The treadlife/treadwear for these tires is 400. Most Z rated tires(performance tires) treadlife is 220-280. The Pirelli is made from some sort of new compound, that I guess just doesn't burn up as much as other tires (including their other series, this is ONLY in relation to PZero Nero M&S tires). The place where I got my wheels and tires recommended them highly, over other tires that did cost more that they could have easily sold to me at the time.(I was hopped up over finally owning a BMW, and was ready to throw some tight shoes on it!) I just got my wheels rotated the other day (I'm religious about it, every 3k) at a different shop, and they also commented on this series tire being the current 'sweet tire' to get due to it's performance and longevity.

Probably not your choice for the track (there are other tires better for track performance), but for an overall performance tire, it's great. The cost is VERY good, about $130-160 a tire. (For 225x40x18's at least)

You should hit tirerack and just compare the ones you're considering. TireRack.Com does a great comparision, and has thousands of comments from people who have purchased the tires.

hmmm, with a treadware of 400 i can't believe they would be nearly as sticky as tires with 280 treadware numbers.



also, any idea what treadware my R compunds are? like 200? or lower

Heh, maybe like 100-120? (j/k, I dunno,but I wouldn't be shocked if I wasn't far from the mark if they're slicks).

So far they are just as sticky as the set of Falkens (220 treadwear) and Kumho's(280 treadwear, both high performance tires) I had on my previous car( to be honest, I've pushed these tires and the BMW harder then I ever have with any previous vehicle/tire combo I've owned). They are incredible in the rain, where my Falken's had issues with traction in wet conditions. The Kumho's were ok, but wore down faster than the Falkens did, and did not have quite the same grip and traction as the Falkens, or these Perilli's.. When the Perilli's get warm, they've been like glue. I'm sure they're no track tire, but they're grippy Z rated shoes.. [:D]

/Edit: I think the Pirelli's you were looking at (PZero Rosso Asimmetrico) are Performance Summer tires, the M&S are Ultra Performance all season tires. Certainly a difference in what they'll do and last. Maybe it's something in that new compound that makes em sticky. [:)]

Ouch.. We thought we were hot s*** last week, we got 1 1/2 inches of snow. now we're in a heat wave, mid 70's.. I think spring has sprung down here.. I'd gladly ship you some, I wanna see more snow! [:(]

well, i just put the order through on a set of Yokohama ES100's. 235/40-17 came out to be around 150ish a tire, and with mount and balance total was like $706. I'll give the full report when i get them on.

I think you will like the ES 100s. They won't compare to your S03s, but they cost a lot less. If you make the switch from snows to the ES 100s, you might like them better than if you are coming straight from the S03s. Tires often have their best traction at the end of their useful life, right before they become useless.

I will be putting ES 100s on the TL when I order the factory 18s in a few weeks. (Normally I wouldn't buy factory rims, but I am getting them at $500 less than actual dealer cost, or $928 for the rims AND the tires, so I couldn't pass that up)

My buddy is replacing a set of S03s on his 2000 Audi S4 with the ES 100s.

Yokohama should pay me a commission. [rofl]
