about 2 hours ago my car broke down. it felt like i hit someting (which happens all the time due to brown snow chunks and low ride height) but at the next light things down sound so good. the next 200m sounded like something metallic was dragging from my engine bay, but everything else seemed ok.

i pulled off and popped the hood. an odd aroma filled the air, not tire, not clutch, not oil, but a little bit of tire/clutch. not clutch because while pulling off it engaged fine, not tire because i would've felt it.

something is out of order, as i peer into my engine bay. and then i see a piece of plastic sitting on the engine cover. i recognize what it is and look down, every blade on the fan that sits behind my radiator was snapped off, and the blades were all over the engine bay. the smell was coolant. but the radiator still looked fine.

i started it for about 5 seconds with the hood open and was scared shitless, sounded soooo bad. the fan looked to be no longer perpendicular to the crank.

i rolled the car back and underneath the radiator some coolant had leaked out and there was a spring sitting on the right side.

i'll post pics tomorrow when i go get the car towed to bmw....[V]

i have no idea what happened, but every single blade was snapped at a different point and in a different way, and they looked to be all pretty clean breaks. as you can see the blade in my hand has no other damage to it. the serpentine belt was still fine. but wow, its just.... wow.

Yikes!! That sucks!!! I see what you mean about the fan not being perpendicular to the shaft. It looks like maybe the fluid fan clutch failed (it looks like it has one), and then the fan blades hit the radiator or shroud and blew apart. Let us know what they tell you. I sure hope it's nothing more serious, but the coolant leak is not good news....

Hehe ... I see BeemerWorld posted the same answer while I was composing mine...
