Another deliberate attempt at twisting the facts by the liberal left, "President Clinton and the Democratic leadership hope to pay for health care reform, in large part, by increasing taxes on tobacco products. The original Clinton bill would have added a 99-cent tax on every pack of cigarettes to the current federal tax of 24 cents and state and local taxes of about 28 cents. The versions of the Clinton plan introduced by Senator George Mitchell (D-ME) and Representative Richard Gephardt (D-MO) would increase the federal cigarette tax to 69 cents a pack, while the Senate Finance Committee health bill would raise the tax to $2.24 a pack. " (see link for complete article) Although in this case I agree, tax them to death.

Am I a victim of the elite libral media bias again? Fox News led me to some mainstream right wing News organizations. "Reason" reported the news (while quoting the New York Times for facts) a while ago. http://www.reason.com/sullum/070502.shtml. Reublican Bloomberg hicked the tax from $0.08 to $1.50 on top of the NY state tax of $1.50. The reknown conservative CATO institute says the Republican mayor's tax hike "spurred crime against legal businesses" and that "the mayor's paternalistic effort to protect smokers from themselves has placed other Americans at greater peril." http://www.cato.org/dailys/06-04-03.html

The American Lung Association (are they elite or libral?) says that a bunch of states increased their cigarette taxes this year. http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=42613 Fully 9 of them have republic govenors and the rest have mostly Republican controlled legislatures.

Republican's have the tax up over $3 a pack in NYC? Jeez. When does it end? Conservative web sites are up in arms. They're coming into our homes and telling us what we can and can't do. Because I enjoy having an ocassional cigarette, I have to pay dollars a pack for Bush's $450 billion deficit while wind surfing rich guys get tax cuts. The CATO institute is right to be outraged.

My response to friends who smoke, when they ask if it's OK to light up - "Do you mind if I fart in your face?"

Usually they get the message!

Oh, and BigD, this is what the Republicans ACUTALLY did in the past couple years....not as you pointed out Cinton CONSIDERED doing 10 years ago. Just more and more tax and spend by government. It's out of hand.
