Yeah...it's just two different classes of cars, in terms of performance. Also, BMW always has to compromise to provide luxury and features and crap.

Even the M3 CSL, which supposedly does not compromise, really does compromise with the SMG tranny.
That's not a compromise at all. BMW see this as the next wave of transmission technology, which beats all functions of the 3-pedal gearbox except for some users enjoyment of "rowing the gears". It is faster, more precise, and never misses a shift. It's not a compromise at all. You people keep beating a dead horse. It's here to stay and a main reason many high-end auto manufactures are equipping their high-end sport cars/sport sedans with SMG style gearboxes. Get over it....

Amen brother Amen! I am hoping that our next big car has SMG rather than a manual, ever try driving a manual in down town Seattle? Whoa dude!

Two different leagues of cars. Porsche = pure performance while BMW = performance/sports luxury. Interesting comparo though. The REAL comparison would be between only M division cars and Porsches. That would probably make more sense.

I agree completely. While there is no doubt that SMG 'boxes are excellent and here to stay, there should at the very least be the option of a true manual in a "hardcore" drivers car. To me, it seems like cutting off your nose in spite of your face.

I think this is probably spot-on.

We love our Porsche and BMW, but they perform different roles. The Porsche is a sports car - our BMW is a luxury sedan. Every time I turn the key on our Porsche, it makes me smile! Throttle response, handling and braking are exceptional. Seats are very confortable. Car is loud! This car makes you want to drive fast - sometimes really fast! This is the closest to owning an exotic, without the high price. I've owned four in my lifetime and each one has been more refined and more forgiving. Maintenance is very expensive, but we only need to bring her in once every 15,000 miles. The dealer also stinks and they are snooty.

Our BMW feels like a substantial car. An excellent daily driver, but also feels great on road trips. Performs very well for a mid-size sedan. Second best car (performance-wise) that I've owned. Dealer also stinks and snooty.

I've driven most models of both manufacturers and there is no comparison. Each has it's own purpose. Like someone above said "like comparing apples to oranges" My recommendation is to try each one and you can make the choice of which one you prefer.

i have to choose between BMW or a upscale volkswagen, i mean porsche, hmmmm
For a daily driver, I would choose a VW Toureg over an X5. I would also choose a VW Phaeton over a 750iL

Drive all four and you'll understand why.

And no, I didn't say own. Resale on high end VW's is horrible.

Which one is better? The answer is: neither
They fit into different niches. When he asks which do YOU think is better it places it in the realm of opinion and not in the realm of FACTS. So which do i think is better? Well for nowI think that BMW is better. Why? Because i can afford to have my bimmer and drive her everyday and put people in my backseat.(notice the opinion with the purposeful omittance of any factual data on the two Marques).....anyway I would LOOOOOVE to have a Porsche GT3...ok well any of the 911/boxster series for that matter....i would love to have a M3 GTR too......so i guess the answer is: both......err...now i am confused....LOL

I agree with everyone else, these cars are of two different classes. Porsche doesn't compete with BMW, BMW competes with Lexus, and Mercedez-Benz, of which, the cars are composed of luxury as well as performance. Note the different lines of cars as well, the 3 series is the C-class benz, whereas the 7-series is similiar to the s-class (or maybe even the e-class). AMG to M, CSL, hamman and so on.

Within BMW's comptetitors there are competeting cars for each model of that make. Porsche doesn't really compare to the BMW, save the Z4/Z3 to the Boxster. Porsche's line of "performance" vehicles are simply that, performance vehicles. The lowest of this line matches the highest of BMW's, such as the Ms. It really is not proper to compare the two because they are totally not similiar classes. They are both good and bad in their own ways, neither is better.

How much bullshit can you pull out of your ass in one day? Seriously you must buy tons of preperation-H pretty often. You'll just keep coming up with BS "answers" to suit your stupid bias. The porsche is much lighter than the M6 too.
Slick tires? [chair]
Maybe you're thinking of the M3 CSL's near slick tires. That was a good ep, I totally agree that in the dry the M6 would really open up its reserves.
