BMW drivers get no respect

Flirting just might persuade drivers to let you out. Unless you have supermodel looks you’re going to find it hard getting out of junctions in a BMW. According to a survey of more than 5,000 motorists BMW is the car make most drivers would refuse to let out at a junction, followed by a Jaguar, Mercedes, Land Rover and Volvo. In general, the more expensive the car the less likely people are to be courteous, with 37% of those questioned saying they never let certain makes and models out at junctions.

But drivers of upmarket motors might fare better if they learn to turn on the charm. Two-thirds of those questioned said they use smiling and flirtation to get out at junctions and 39% admitted they would be swayed by a good-looking driver.

Other motorists unlikely to attract goodwill from other drivers include anyone speaking on a mobile phone, drivers who look like boy racers, anyone in a “flash” car, women in 4x4s and “white van men”. Car accessories don’t help either — among the most annoying being “Baby on Board” stickers, tinted windows, spoilers and personalised numberplates.

“These results show how judgmental we are,” said Perry Wilson of Insure And Go, the Essex-based online insurance specialist that commissioned the research.

“The type of car someone drives or how good looking they are really shouldn’t come into consideration but they do.”

Somewhat related...

I drove my X3 out to Center City one Saturday last month. Parked on street. Ran in the store, got something. Went out saw a slightly overweight old lady laying her hand on the hood. My eyes [8] & jaw [eek]. She was dragging her feet. Guess she was in serious pain and used my X as a HAND RAIL... I just waxed my X early that morning.

So Stitch.........what was the verdict, did she keel over on your car???? Was she ok? Did you throw a few choice words at her to uphold the BMW personna (hehehe) You always leave us hanging.

Hell if what the story said was true in Germany...............NOBODY would get anywhere[thumb]

I don't think that survey is accurate at all. I think bigger vehicles get more "respect" on the road...easier to force your way into other lanes and through intersections and such. I was always used to driving an SUV and being able to boss people around, but now nobody gives me a chance with my little G. [:(]

What the hell are you talking about? I think most people in cars hate SUV's. I know I do. Even my dad says he can't stand people in trucks and SUV's when he's in his car - and he even OWNS a pickup. I'd be 10000000000000x more likely to let someone in a car in than an escalade. You can't see SHIT in front of SUV's, and people in big SUV's generally can't drive. If I'm on a road with a passing zone, no matter how fast the suv is going I'll typically try to get in front of them so I can at least see the road.

I still have a big conflict in my chest. I can feel her pain, but I love my Bimmers! I don't know. I am hanging, too. Could you make a decision for me? My chest is still in pain. I won't let other touching him!

I always let the better cars get ahead of me. I drive my crapolla around and people cut me off, if I drove my dad's Mercedes, nobody gets in front of me, nobody cuts me off. Its no S class or anything but thats how I feel, respected. And when I drive I dont get in front of that Porsche Turbo that just came next to me. I might stay around it for a little bit but I just wont get in front of it until I got something better.

I dont usually have any problem changing lanes. Sometimes I get some people in pretty crappy cars refuse to let me over. That's just what I have observed.
And in all honesty I always let anyone who uses a turn signal get over as fast as they can, and I am very generous to other BMW drivers, just out of pride.

See, this is exactly why I HATE the majority of people who drive SUVs around. It seems that when people get behind the wheel of an SUV, they all develop this mentality - they feel like they "own" the road and can boss people around. I will help another car out in traffic long before some egotistic jerkwad in an SUV who thinks he can just use his heft to force his way through traffic. I'm not afraid of them, no matter how damn big they are, and I don't give them an inch.

Of course you can boss people around in an SUV...and it's f-ing great! Own an SUV and you will like it more than you think you will, even if you can't stand driving around/with them on the streets.

You can Soo boss people around, I tend not to do it with the mercedes because I dont want to trade paint with anyone, but in the Land Rover, everyone has to yield to me.

Eric, you're exagurating a little bit.. That usually only applies to Hummers, Armada's, expeditions, and suv's of that size.. Normal sized suv's, ie my ML or X5 aren't that big ..

I'll have to admit there is a feeling of power when I drive my 3/4 ton truck but there is no reason for rudeness.

Last week I merged into the fast lane to get around a truck doing about 35mph and was right behind several other cars. A fine quality jerk who was a few hundred feet behind me ran up right behind me flashing his lights and giving me the finger. I'm not sure what he wanted me to do since I was behind other vehicles and doing over 65. This lovely person was bald with a goatee and driving a very old light blue mini van (I think a Caravan or Voyager) and either thought he owned the road or just didn't like bimmers. I finally pulled into the right lane, he passed me, got right in front of me and slowed down. Unfortunately he turned off at my exit right in front of me. The jerk got in the left lane and stopped behind a car. I passed in the right lane and just when I was about to pass him he jerked his car to the right trying to hit me. Fortunately my car handled well and I avoided him. People amaze me. This low life trailer trash in a junk car obviously had nothing to lose and appeared to have a problem with people who work hard and have nice things. I live in an area where there isn't a lot of money so a lot of people feel intimidated for no reason.

There are times when you just need to calmly roll down your window, address the man politely, and bust a cap.

At least in his tire.

Hahahahahhaaha. I never had a single problem when driving SUV's, and from what I have seen, drivers are never offended by my driving. Being inconsiderate is not the same as bossing other cars around. You can just give yourself priority when making tricky lane changes or turns. Driving in NYC is completely different from driving in rural areas, and believe me, an SUV helps out madness.

I completely agree with the turn signal, nobody uses it anymore in the freeway or street and so what I do is if they put their turn signal I let them in with plenty of space. If not they have a tough shit time getting into my lane, besides they cause problems and its dangerous not to use your turn signals so its a way of awarding them but I mean if the exit is coming and the guy looks like he'll cause and accident if I dont' let him in then I do and keep everyone happy. I admire your restraint. Those drivers tend to be fair by few, and I usually take into account their presence and adjust my driving. I wouldn't merge in front of a nasty beater, or pass them close. In NYC with all the double parked cars I always pass them wide...

I usually do too, but in this case it was quite a distance so that I couldn't see the quality of his ride until I was in the other lane. Usually what goes through my head when driving around other cars is, can this guy AFFORD to hit my car and screw up my health? In California I think the required liability insurance is $30,000 but there are so many uninsured drivers here it is scary. I don't have enough disability insurance to mess with scumbags like that.

Yeah, I have noticed that all the crappy car drivers are bad drivers as well as extremely inconsiderate. My commute consists of going by the GW Bridge every day, so I deal with a lot of New Yorkers. Whether they are in a crappy car or not, New Yorkers are the absolute worst drivers. They are unbearably slow, they do not check their blind spots, and they are just extremely inconsiderate....NYCers are in their own world when it comes to driving, and when you're in their territory....well, if ya can't beat 'em, join 'em (without being a jerk).

That is pretty much true, if the person is in some cheapo car they typically drive like idiots. I don't think it's just their mentality, I can tell you it was harder to keep my sister's 92 saturn in a straight line than my dad's truck.
