What's a Kia doing on sale in Germany in the first place?

Similar thing happened last night to me, without the accident of course...

...I was driving 80 in the fast lane and this truck came up right behind me and started flashing me. It looked like he would have pushed me along had I started driving slower.

I didn't know any of the Autobahn speed protocols when I went there the first time, but the rental car agent explained it by saying "STAY OUT OF THE LEFT LANE UNLESS YOU ARE PASSING OR YOU *WILL* GET REAR ENDED BY A PORSCHE!" I laughed and she said it AGAIN. I decided she was serious! It then took me about 10 minutes on the Autobahn to figure out the protocols - it *really* is that obvious once you are on the open road.

I feel sorry for the Mom and kid, but with the extensive driver training required for Europeans and the warnings that the rental agents give you, it's difficult to believe that she didn't know better. In the US, this is comparable to riding a bike on a freeway. Oh yeah, some people do that.....

I hope this never happens, the German autobahns are the only hope left to those of us who drive high-performance cars in America. When you own a car like a BMW or a Porsche in America and constantly have to deal with bullshit speed limits, you can always find solace in the fact that German autobahns still exist. If this happens, which I strongly doubt, we should expect widespread outbursts of riots.

Also, if this actually does happen nobody is gonna to pay attention to speed limits. You have to be an insane, suicidal cop to go after a car travelling at 150mph in traffic going 130mph+. Even if the cop decides to run after you and by luck actually gets out and up to speed, you'll either be long gone by then or you'll just keep running. The autobahns were designed with extremely high speeds in mind, so you can run from the police at high speeds as long as you want; banked curves will keep your ass on the road, and long straights aren't going to slow you down.

I feel sooo sorry for the kid in the passenger of that car. I have no remorse for the stupidity or her asinine mom, behind the wheel going that fast on a POS kia.

What the hell is a kia doing in the autobahn anyway? Geez...

Wow, you've got to be kidding me. I read all the posts here first before reading the article and I thought I was going to be reading about a huge multi-car pile-up or atleast two cars involved in a serious high-speed accident, not some stupid mom in a Kia who freaked out and lost control of her peice of crap car because some flashed lights at her to move out of the way. What she was doing was illegal. Could you imagine what would have happened if a cop was going to pull her over? All those different coloured flashing lights and sirens - She probably would have caused even more of an incident had that happened.

the cry of the drivers "FREE ROADS FOR FREE PEOPLE" i heard, from history channel, that the autobahn is like the gun lobby here, that you cannot get rid of it, that they got so much money that will never happen, but as traffic increases speed will decreases

Good article. I like the guy's point of view. On the way home today I had more than my usual share of left-lane turtles who refuse to move over. I despise people who think they can travel as slow as they want in any lane they want. It's my time they're wasting and it's time I won't get back. Slower speeds is not the answer. We need to raise the bar with driver education and driving tests. In many states in the U.S., you can get a license without ever having taken a single class or a single mile of driving instruction. Pitiful. [mad]

Its true that in europe, it is quite difficult to obtain a liscense to drive, and for good reason, they are all nuts over there. ;) In the US, driving lisences are a joke and more so are the people driving. for example, slow in the fast lane. i get irate when i come across these bafoons - you wouldnt believe how much i love to just open it up on the autobahn... and you get respect, in a sense that people know to keep out of your way if you choose to go fast.

With all this FCC news going on and threats to shut down free speech piece by piece and take over by the republicans, i feel so much like brushing up on my german and french. then i hear about stuff like this and i am ready to become an ass wipe assassin. where will this stop?

So true. I was born in Europe and it's really hard to get a license there, plus you have to be 18+. I've heard that in Germany you have to get 8 months of training and it sometimes costs over $3,000 to get a license. Each time I go back to Europe people there talk about how easy it is to get a license here. Getting my license was basically a waste of time, I learned absolutely nothing and just wasted $275 on driving around in a dog-shit automatic Corolla with no tachometer and one of those annoying beaded things on the steering wheel.

There simply is too much traffic on most of our Autobahns...unfortunatley. And it takes too long and too much money to make them all three/six lanes, which is all so necassary.
Thank God there's one close to my house, where there's barely any traffic, especially on Sundays! Let the fun begin!!

As for that girl, I am so sorry. The mother was probabaly not too experienced and got scared. That would explain the car she's driving! Who drives a KIA in Germany, when you have Beamers?
I take my little boy for spins on the left lane [driving2] and I make sure I stay over 120 (miles/hr that is)....just having fun....but like I said , you have to know on what Autobahn to let it rip.... [bmwkick]

[chair] Floyd are you kidding me?????????????? Stupid mom? Dude I saw the F#ckin video of this asshole. Flashing lights? The autobahn is a free road for everyone...not just idiots with fast cars. The guy rode her bumper while she was PASSING another car. As she was getting over he gunned his little benz and clipped her bumper...thus sending her in to the ditch and tree costing her and her daughters life. HEY you know what else.....? The asshole did not even stop after he caused the accident. Some bystander happened to catch the whole shabang on film. That is how he got caught. This dude should be hung. He cost a husband his wife and daughter. Put yourself in the husbands position...you get the news your wife and daughter were killed 'cause some idiot in a fast car forced her off the road. I have a fast car also....I don't drive like an idiot where my actions of irresponsibility are going to cost innocent lives.

Your post was TOTALLY unjustified and un called for.

i agree the dude should pay for what he did, but i hope i never have to live in a world where every accident is followed by a change of rules. horrible that it happened, but adding safety nets to the world will make us all lazy and helpless.

I have to say all that most of us know is what's on that article, so we made an opinion based on what the article said. The truth of the article, as with most articles, are much to be desired for. In any case, I'm sure that if we saw the video, our opinions would have been changed.

I agree on all issues.

One very unfortunate accident should not be the reason for changing the speeds entirely. The U.S. speed limits are significantly lower and we still have accidents. IMO an increase in knowledge, awareness and most of all common sense will help reduce the amount of accidents on the roads. I’ve seen people on the highway putting on make-up, eating or reading while driving.

I was going to say the same thing, gathered the safety regulations they have on the autobahn, you'd think they wouldn't sell a car that fails to meet the requirements...

Exactly. I don't live in Germany - all I know is from what I read in the article. I'm sure what you're saying is right but based on what I knew my post wasn't totally uncalled for...
