SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- A 17 year-old high school student faked the theft of his 2002 BMW M3 in order to collect insurance money to upgrade to a Bentley, police said on Thursday.

The teen, a student of Skyline High School in Sammamish, a suburb of Seattle, had reported the car stolen earlier this week, said Michael Chiu, a spokesman for the police in Bellevue, another suburb located between Seattle and Sammamish.

Police in another town found the $47,000 BMW being stripped and arrested four suspects, who connected the teen to the theft, leading to his arrest.

"That investigation led us to believe that he wanted to upgrade to a Bentley," Chiu said.

Bentleys, featured frequently in U.S. hip-hop videos, have a suggested retail price of $160,000 for the Continental GT coupe and $240,000 for the Arnage sedan.

The BMW was in the name of the teen's mother name but was used as his vehicle, Chiu said. The student was released to his mother, and prosecutors are considering charges.

Wow, what a dumb kid. It was probably an M3 w/SMG and the kid had no idea what car he had. I think the Bentley part was just bullshit. They quoted a cop, not the kid himself, and $47K doesn't buy you a Bentley....the Bentley part was just for media hype or something.

A friend of mine described the M3 w/SMG well today, he called it a "double-edged sword." On one hand, it's faster and offers the best performance, on the other hand, it's what all the noobs who can't drive stick get just so they can have the M3. M cars should just be stick shift only.

Ah well, he's dumb, thats all you can say, although really, whats the big deal about the whole "daddy's money" issue? If his dad buys him an M3, good luck to 'em, we shouldn't sit here saying "daddy's money" like he didn't deserve the car or something, who knows, maybe he did something... spectacular... like get an A grade in something, or spelling the word, "cat", correctly...?

I don't know where his quote ends and yours begins and this is not meant as a flame but.....I think he(you) missed the boat here. Actually I can't believe you would think that, in fact I think I have read some other posts by you about the benefits of SMG.

It has nothing to do with the ability to drive a stick shift. The SMG simply shifts faster than is humanly possible or automatic tranny possible. That's it. Nothing to do with noobs. Maybe a noob would get it for that reason, but it would be for the wrong reason because that is not what BMW intended.

You do rock bmwrocks!! Thanks for this post. I can drive a "stick shift" as well as anyone on this board...but I just don't like it. My first car I ever had was a manual (300ZX), so ability has nothing to do with buying an SMG. It is simply just the most amazing piece of machinery. Don't F1 cars use SMG technology? And I'm sure they know how to shift, don't they?

Actually this information came from the four people who were arrested while stripping the BMW, and is factually correct. The $50k insurance money was planned to be used for the down payment of the Bentley.

Spoiled brat. Parents gave him too much and he doesn't appreciate it. In my opinion if a teenager can earn the money for a nice car then good for him. There are too many arrogant, spoiled, kids around who think they deserve everything and their parents just give it to them. Teaches them nothing. [}:)]

This happened in my back yard! The result of a spoiled little rich brat.
No kidding! What I can’t believe is they are calling Bellevue a suburb!

This is a large and wealthy city….

Emile, I can’t believe what I just read! I know for a fact that I am no “noob” when it comes to driving a stick. It is what I learned to drive on (66 Mustang fastback w/Hurst 4 speed) and is all I have really only owned when it comes to sport/GT type automobiles. I am tired of defending SMG by those who have no idea.

SMG has nothing to do with “noobs”. Your friend, who you believe summed it up “well today”, has no idea what the hell he is talking about. It is easy to hate on something you have no experience in. I get tired of beating a dead dog. Most, and I am sure there are the “noobs” who cannot drive stick, who purchase a SMG equipped M3 do so for many reason, but I can assure you a lot do so not because they can’t drive a stick. Man this gets old….

Scott your 100% right on! Bellevue is a city of it's own where median home value topped $1 million in the 2000 Census.

And although I do not own an SMG I have many friends who do. Several of them are BMW CCA Driving School instructors far from being "noobs" who "can't drive a stick".
