A British magazine ran a 545 mile fuel economy race from London to Geneva in a BMW 520d and a Prius. The BMW got BETTER mileage (50.3 mpg) than the Prius (48.1 mpg) and was able to drive faster to boot!!!!!!!!

The Prius is a gas guzzler!!!! [hihi]

[cheers]

Amazing. It makes no sense that diesel fuel is so expensive in the US, and why more car companies aren't making more diesel vehicles available in the US.

Diesel-hybrid-powered SUV's and pickup trucks should be the new wave of automobiles in the US.

Perfectly said Mr. E. These have been my exact sentiments for years and years, especially after having owned 2 turbodiesels.

Diesel is almost a "byproduct" of refining oil to make gasoline.....so it should be, IMO, 1/2 the cost or less of gasoline. The price of diesel is just absurd!

Yup yup. After the refining process of one barrel of oil, more gallons of diesel is produced compared to the amount of regular fuel. I don't know how diesel fuel prices compare to regular fuel on a global scale, but in the US supposedly it's more expensive because diesel is not popular enough to require competitive pricing in a non-competitive market.

It's a no-win situation in the US. Diesel prices are expensive so diesel fuel is not a demand for US consumers, but at the same time it takes more diesel cars for a competitive market in order for diesel fuel to be priced appropriately.

Do you remember when JW turned refineries to gas from diesel.... Guess what, they never turned them back.... If I remember correctly, the additives to be put to lower the emissions hurt the refiners too, so is the buyer,... the ultimate victim...

The American car companies, most notably GM, gave the diesel car a bad reputation in the 70s and 80s. They built a few models with industrial diesel engines (noisy, sooty, smelly) and tried to pass it off as a consumer product, Of course it failed, and they disillusioned the diesel car market for decades.
