The kicker is, crash-tests aren't always really 100%, I remember the Isuzu Trooper was having 'topsy' problems some years ago, GM was trying to fix the problem, they retested the car 3 times and got 3 different results. Given the car isn't very good, it proves that just one inch off can completely offset your entire results.

Also they are testing the Volvo S80, a full size sedan the 5er is only mid-size.

Mike, you beat me to the post ( guess your +9 hours helped:) I was just getting ready to post the article about the doomed 2008 5er, as reported by the AP.

It really sucks for BMW (whether true or not) that the Kia Amanti scored safer than the 2008 5 Series!

On a good note (at least for me and MBZ)....my 2008 E-Class earned the 2nd highest rating of cars tested!! Yeah Mercedes!!

Actually the Volvo S80 does compete with the 5-Series in terms of both pricing and size.

But I have to agree, 1 vehicle test isn't sufficient and shouldn't be considered scientific. That said, I'm still surprised that both Premiere German brand ranked so low.

^ Well its a Volvo, cheap is its middle name. :)

But seriously, in the US it competes with the 5er but competes with the 7er in Europe--its the same length but interior much bigger. This is an example of German automakers moving their 3 car models up range (in size) while everyone else kept theirs the same size, Jaguar, Saab, etc. Which is why the 3er has become unpopular for some and why they are coming back with the 2002--1er (again BMW setting standards--sign of market leadership).

I have a friend who one an S80, I've got to admit its actually a really good car.

Ugly or not "ThatOneGuy" the 5 series has proven profitable and sells like hotcakes, the resale alone is spectacular--almost makes one not want to have it.

Both premiere German brands?? Mercedes did well, with #2 highest in safety. Let's not pull the 3 pointed star into the 5er's bad crash territory [nono]

I love!!! BMW, but Mercedes is still Germany's "official/national" brand, and the "trophy" of Germany.

When do we get to see the article; "Dodge, Chevy, and Ford make their truck too f***ing tall in an effort to be MACHO!!!" ?? I can sit behind a Dodge "Dually" at traffic light and be completely invisible to them in my cabrio... I can only imagine what would happen if I were to get hit in my door.... er... my window.

There seems to be a bit of funkiness going on here.

Here is the official page for the crash test results for anyone who wants to know the details:

http://www.iihs.org/ratings/ratingsbyseries.aspx?id=459

As you can see, 2004-2008 models performed well in frontal crash test results; almost flawless, in fact. I am surprised to see that the trend did not continue with side impact crash tests. I think something went wrong or the IIHS was overly harsh on the BMW, but maybe BMW can make a few changes to the Torso and Pelvis/Leg areas on side impact crashes. Perhaps the face-lifted 2008 model (which they did not test and they claimed to have tested) has fixed these problems.
