On Monday I took my Infiniti FX in for a headlight/taillight recall service and they gave a brand new 2007 Infiniti G35 loaner. Having driven the 2004-2006 models in the past and this car for the last 3 days I can say I'm thoroughly impressed by the latest incarnation of the G35.

Everything about it was better than the previous model. Gone are the flimsy plastic and scratch prone aluminum trims. Instead they are now replaced with much stiffer rubber and new aluminum trimming that seems to be much more scratch resistant.

In addition to having more power, the handling and stability control seems much better on this car than the previous. The transmission also felt very different in the 2007 model, I noticed that it tends to keep the car in a lower gear longer for better acceleration. While this is nice, it makes the ride seem less smooth during city driving. That said, it was still very smooth and quiet on the highways.

I'm glad they finally ditched the awkward upward facing seat adjustment buttons and put them on the sides. They were always a pain for me to keep clean.

The new radio is really easy to use and has audio/video inputs, the bush button start is also a nice feature. All in all, I think Infiniti is really giving BMW a good run for the money in terms of competition. I would definitely recommend this over the Lexus IS in terms of a good 3-Series contender.

The new G35 Sedan looks like a really cool car. The styling is pimp as shit for a sedan and the quality of interior materials looks really nice, better than my 06 Coupe. I feel that the 3-Series Sedan still features a more luxurious interior and makes use of higher quality materials throughout, but Infiniti has "answered back" extremely well.

I really like how Infiniti is consistently stepping up to the plate and refuses to fall behind or look bad in any way, shape, or form. I have never seen a car company that so firmly believes in their product and as a result, is absolutely relentless about maintaining a competitive stance in the hyper-aggressive market of entry-level luxury/sport sedans.

But now with BMW's 3.0 liter 300bhp biturbo I6 motor for the 335i and the upcoming 4.0 liter 414bhp motor for the new M3, I hope Infiniti does the smart thing and introduces a second model for the "G series" lineup which sports an engine that produces a level acceleration that is smack dab in the middle of the 335i and the M3 at a price that is less than the 335i. This would be recent history repeating itself which throws something new in the mix (two engine options available for the G).

Nice write up Tom. Based on your pix, I like the interior, but I REALLY don't like the front end of this car. It's the headlights. Some people really bashed the headlights of the 5 series, to me these headlights are 100x worse than the 5 series. For some reason they scream "RICER" to me....

I totally agree, the headlights are hideous. I still think the 5er headlights are nasty, and really cheap and 100% un-Deutsch...but these are gross!

The interior does look good, but a bit too gadgety, and the instrument cluster looks fussy (German cars have the best instrument clusters!).

I still think the G35 coupe is way, way better than the sedan.

Good write up, and thanks for the pics!

Detrich, the new Skyline GT-R is going to be very expensive and goes after the Porsche 911 Turbo.

They need to release like a G40 with like 390hp. So we have the G37 with 330hp and the G40 with 390hp. That would be good marketing.
