A Japanese company (Toyota ) and an American company (General Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River .
Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race. On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowingand 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles,

Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India.

Here's something else to think about:

Ford has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US, claiming they can't make money paying American wages while Toyota has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US.

The last quarter's results:

Toyota makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses.
Ford folks are still scratching their heads.

LOL, very funny and quite sad at the same time.

Instead of designing cars that people want, Ford continues to sell Americans the same old crap and label it as new.

Take for instance the Ford Focus.

In Europe and everywhere else including Mexico, they get this. Same platform as the Mazda 3 and Volvo S40.

While here in the US we get a "refreshed" version of this pile of heap based on a platform that is 8 years old.

Here is the flaw in your logic though, Toyota employess roughly 30,000 people in the US while together Ford and GM employee over 5 million.

Ford sucks bottom line, there sales keeping coming down a lot of its politics. GM has had a pretty good year so far, and they are thinking outside the box and they have formed some pretty heafty profits, the stock is up, while Ford is flat. GM while win in the long run.

This is SO true about Ford. However, it is changing. I read an article a few months ago about the new CEO of Ford (the first outsider ever). He found so many organizational problems and is now shaking things up big time.

For example, it has been an unwritten rule in Ford that a junior employee is FORBIDDEN to SPEAK to a senior employee, unless you have your boss's specific permission. They could not accept an invitation to a business or SOCIAL event without their boss's permission!

He was told they lose $3000 on EVERY Ford Focus they sell in the US. When he asked WHY, he was told that "We have to sell a low cost car as a loss leader." He asked again WHY do we lose money, why have we not figured out how to lower manufacturing costs and MAKE money, why haven't we studied this. NOBODY could answer - for years they had just accepted the fact that they HAD to lose money!

Why do all these car companies think we are so different from other countries? Exactly what makes these companies think that what we really want to drive, is a crappy car? Good looks, high fuel economy and low emissions, and good performance (good blend of ride and handling) is what everybody wants when shopping for their new car.

Considering how many cars the US has on the road, you would think the auto industry would be more accomodating to our needs and wants.

But we still are different from other countries. For a lot of us, our life style has allowed us to continue having confortable big cars with big engines... if it ain't broken... you know the rest...!!
Since the 70's other countries had to change their way, pushing the thinking further, adding turbo to small diesel to make them think they are gasolin...
Size changed, components changed, where here in the good old US of A, the only thing the auto industry had to concentrate on was reliability to compete with the rest.
One battle late... When we were doing that, the Japanese and European were re-inventing the concept of a family vehicle.
Happy driving...[driving]
