What lies beneath those lean, wolfish lines is none other than an all-new M-car, one that walks in the recently planted footsteps of the M5 and M6 and, as such, a car with one hell of an act to follow.

...the fact that the Boxster S is a demonstrably more capable car than the Z4M does not entirely undermine the BMW's appeal. On the contrary: the Z4M may not be as technically accomplished as the Boxster, but this does not mean that, in the right environment, it is not capable of being a whole lot more fun.

.....the twin cam, 24-valve M motor gets stronger and more vocal with every additional rev so that by the time you're nearing its 8000rpm red-line, it's emitting one of the most cultured, blue-blooded yowls it's been my pleasure to hear.
.....

In short, and so long as you turn off the traction control, this car is an animal. With more than enough power to overwhelm the grip of the tyres in a slow corner, a short wheelbase to make sure that when the back moves it does so very quickly and a nice, even weight distribution to help keep everything under control, indulging the hooligan that lurks deep within most of us is a delightfully simple pursuit. Good though a Boxster is, it can't do this.
....
a yob with a private education and closer in character to a TVR than anything produced by either Porsche or Mercedes.
.....
So a flawed diamond for sure, but a diamond nonetheless. ..... Yes, the Boxster is the better car......But for those who like their driving pleasures rough and ready, rather than silky smooth, the Z4M has a mighty appeal. Most important of all, to me at least, it is a proper, unreconstructed M-car. In an era when BMW is using the M badge to ever less noble ends, that is hugely reassuring.

Interesting article and I am surprised that the Boxster S holds up so well against this car. Watching the 5th Gear review (I think that was it) where they were racing the Z4 3.0i and Boxster S around the track, the Z4 was so close in performance that I thought the new M Roadster would surpass the Boxster S in all areas of performance, as well as driving experience as a whole.

Maybe the article was referring to the 130i M sport or M package or whatever they decide to call it as the "less noble end".

Boxster S has it own reputations for yrs. The test would never be fair, if the testdriver got that tatoo inside. Somebody like us has to go test the limits. [:)]

Actually seemed like a pretty bad review to me. I don't know any more about the car now than I could have guessed. Spent a lot of time saying it's not as good as the Boxster S, but not really why. It even said that the Z4M is faster.

Some reviews are more subjective opinions than others. This one certainly is on the subjective side. What I got out of it is that the Z4M is a worthy competitor to the Boxter S.
