Hey,

So last night, this guy in a Pontiac Vibe pulled up next to me at a light and I saw he was checking out my car the whole time. When the light turned green, I accelerated slowly to let him go ahead as the road soon merges into one lane. But he was accelerating with me (I don't know if he was testing me or not), and I was still in 1st so I punched it and easily toasted him. I doubt it was even a race at all, but I had just spent the night in NYC where lots random fools wanted to race me so I was still in that driving mood. [driving2]
Anyways, I was just checking out the specs of the Pontiac Vibe on the Pontiac web site, and the higher-output 4-cylinder motor produces its maximum horsepower (I think 173hp) at 7,600rpm! I checked out some pics and it looks like the redline is a screaming 8,000rpm!!! Can you guys believe that?? PONTIAC has an 8,000rpm motor! With the introduction of the Pontiac GTO and Pontiac's new "performance" image, it really seems like the American companies are trying hard to provide people with a true driving pleasure that BMW is known for. What do you all think??

Thanks,
MrElussive

My car can rev to 8 grand no prbolem. The engine was tested at 8500rpm. The rev limit is not for the engine, but for the accessories not to destroy themselves...

Interesting isn't it?

Pontiac probably used some japanese design or sometihng of the sort to get that out of the vibe.

You got it, they use Toyota's Celica motors in those.

The car IS a toyota isnt it? Toyota matrix to be exact. Just with pontiac badges on it, sold from crappy pontiac dealers with crappy GM service.

Yes, the Vibe and the Matrix are one in the same. But, it's not that the Pontiac is just a rebadged Toyota, and the Toyota is not a rebadged Pontiac. Both cars were designed jointly between GM and Toyota - both cars are composed of both GM and Toyota components and are built together in a joint venture manufacturing plant.

I have a friend that bought a Matrix XR. I'm not a big fan of the car.

Well, the "sold from crappy pontiac dealers with crappy GM service." part still holds.

It's such a wack car, anyways. I just think the 8,000rpm redline is impressive...you don't expect a high-revving engine like that in such a regular car. I wonder if it sounds nice.

Well, my buddy didn't get the XRS with the 8,000rpm redline. He's got the lesser engine in his (6,000rpm redline), and it certainly does not sound nice - very buzzy.

Yeah, I always thought they were such similar cars, but I NEVER would have thought that it was a joint project by PONTIAC and TOYOTA. I just thought it was the dawn of a new type of vehicle.

Joint design my ass. It's based off the Corolla and uses almost all Corolla/Matrix parts. Pretty much the only GM input was different design features to visually differentiate it from the Matrix. All the major mechanical bits are still Toyota. And it's a Yamaha. I don't think Toyota's quite figured out the high revving engine thing in its production engines yet.

Hmmm - my bad, I guess. When my buddy was buying his Matrix, the salespeople told us that both vehicles were designed jointly by Toyota and GM with components from both GM and Toyota. Both the Pontiac dealer and the Toyota dealer told us that. They could very well have been wrong - most salespeople are. I do know that the powertrain is completely Toyota for both vehicles, and both vehicles have assorted visible GM parts like the radio. Pfft, I don't really care - I don't like either one of the cars - they are not impressive by any means in my book.

Mr. E - they are totally identical cars, just with some different exterior styling. The interiors are completely indistinguishable between the Pontiac and the Toyota aside from the emblem on the steering wheel.

Hehe! I traded in my IS300 for a Matrix to be practical then I traded it with my current 330i as soon as I paid the Matrix off, all this in a span of 2 years. The Matrix was also an 04 and was only 6 months old with 5000 miles. Crazy me or what. My XR was a great PRACTICAL car and nothing more. Forget about being a road racer with the car. Even the XRS. The HP does not kick in until 6000 RPM then achieves 180hp at 8000. They call it the "Lift" thingy. As far as the Matrix/Vibe interior&Engine. It's all Toyota except for the radio. Maybe when they said joint design. It means pontiac designed there exterior working around toyota's interior to make it there own.

I bet the pontiac badges were made in Korea, as well as everything else that claims to be "American" made. That is why I bought a BMW, most everthing (major components) are made by Bosch....a german based company and the factories are in Germany.

Did y'all here that VW GMBH just aquired Lamborghini.........BMW now makes Bentley.....and Mercedes makes Maybach.....all the good cars are being made in Germany now. Labor is NOT cheap here so it is not because of that. German=quality=reputation=lots of sales.

Freakin Harleys are not even made in the U.S. any more...whats up with that?

A lot of the European manufacturers and their suppliers are building factories in Eastern Europe. I hope the quality doesn't suffer because of it. It's kinda making me worried. Even some factions of the hardcore European unions are caving in on some demands to slow down the losses of jobs to Eastern Europe.
