FRANKFURT (AFX) - Bayerische Motoren Werke AG's next chief executive Norbert Reithofer, who will take over from Helmut Panke September 1, told Boersen-Zeitung his company is considering expanding its US production to meet increasing North American demand.

He told the newspaper BMW might expand production at its Spartanburg, USA plant to 200,000 units from the current 140,000 level.

He did not state a timeframe for the expansion.

'We are going to continue the successful journey of the BMW Group,' Reithofer said.

Reithofer declined to comment on recent press reports that BMW plans to shift X3 production to Germany and the US from Austria.

He also said BMW is considering plans to introduce more compact sports cars in order to attract more customers to the brand.

'With the BMW 1 there are certainly possibilities for additional models,' the incoming chief executive said.
