Would you want the E36 back?

If I was the head designer for BMW, I think I would bring back the E36 3-series with "slight" changes, I don't like how the new E90 will look. Well they look ok for a car, but not compared to their older counterparts. I would really want the E36 back, with the same basic shape, just maybe a few updated lines here and there to make it look a bit different. What do you think, would you want the E36 back?

No, not that I 'like' all the changes in the E90 from the E46, but I don't like 'retro' looks, such as the new Mustang that's coming out. To me a 'retro' look is like saying "Here's what we wish we'd done back when we first made it..". The E36 is classic, I'd hate to see that spoiled by a new car trying to look like it. The E36 was a big step from the E30. The E46 was mostly cosmetic, no 'huge' changes occurred. The E90 will be the next big 'change' in the 3 series.

The E90 isn't all that bad looking, and I'm sure it will be a BMW through and through, regardless if it's outside doesn't perk all of the 3 series followers to instantly go spend a fortune on one. It's not out yet, so who knows what final touches and changes will be done to it(Really who knows what all these photos are that are floating around.. So much photoshopping going on, I think I'll wait till BMW says "Here, look at me!"). I think it'll be 'correct' when it hits the market, the 3 series is BMW's bread and butter. They can't afford to lose the sales growth they've experienced the past few years.

And when it's all said and done, BMW will do whatever brings in the most $. Hopefully us Fanatics can enfluence BMW more than the folks who bought one as a social 'badge'.

The e30 and e36 are CLASSIC bmw designs. NO one matched those. Everyone can sport an e30 or e36. The e46 blurred the line of BMW distinction, and now I think BMW designs for the future are horrid. I would NEVER buy a new BMW over a low mileage e36/e30. BMW has lost their way... if I was the head, I would bring it back with only subtle changes... keep that distinctive BMW look and not become a jap hybrid design....

Hmmmm....I woudln't mind the E36's rear lights back. Actually the whole back end was cool...it was tight. And its rocker pannels rocked!

The rest is done better by the E46 (pre-Bangle face lift). It's deep eyes can't be beat. I mean just look at the white E46 above!! The progression of design couldn't get any better than that. The pre-face lift E46 will be a real classic and worth a lot of money some day (an un-biased opinion here).

I hope the new 1 series is more E36 than the Bangle abominations. I have my fingers crossed for van Hooeydonk (sp?).

The E46 is no doubt one of the best looking cars on the market right now. However there is something about the E36 that makes it look very "European-like" if you know what I mean. If it was up to me, I'd just keep cycling the production between the E36 and E46[rofl]

Yah, we can all wait a few years for the E90 'facelift' I guess. [:)] I still say wait for the first one to come out before getting all bent out of shape about it, then you can gripe for a facelift (or buttlift!)

It certainly isn't a 'jap' car, and I don't think it has any jap lines. I don't like all of Bangle's changes, but it's 'german' minded, not eastern.. All good things come to an end, and must so that something even better can come out of it all. The regular 3 sedan and 4 coupes look to have optional 3.0 or 3.5l engines? A 3.5 would be faster than a E46 M3.. M4 is going to again be the 'bar' that other companies measure their sports sedans and coupes to. And if you somehow get bored with it, go play with the new M5 and M6's coming out.

I agree. As much as I really like my e46, I LOVED my e36 and would take it back in a heartbeat if I could. I would love to see BMW slightly modify the old e36 and put them back out for a little while - just so I could see a few more on the road everyday [:)]

i agree, e36 body with e46 engines.

i really like the look of the e36.

i would like to see an e36 m3 with the e46 m3 engine (standard).

that would be amazing!!!! but as for the bringing back the e36, i would prabably say yes simply because i don't like most of bangle's designs. with a few exceptions, (e46 CIs and m3s), i could easily do without. bmw really needs to step it up this coming year because everyone seems to be going with more power at more affordable prices. i'd rather purchase a 300hp awd car for 30k (wrx sti), over a 220 hp car for 35k and up (330CIs).
